    Yo,

I've got a DVD I'm trying to sub. The sound I'm subbing is composed of speaking and singing sort of in the background. I want all the spoken stuff to be subtitled at the bottom while I want the songs to be subtitled at the top. The best I've been able to do up to now, using srt2sup, is put 2 seperate subtitle tracks on the one DVD but I need to switch between the two and I'd like to get both at once.

Can such a thing be done, using srt2sup or otherwise? Like merging two sup files?

Also if possible I'd like to have different colours for the toptitles and bottomtitles.

I think with Sub Station Alpha you can format the subs anyway you want, save them as SRT, convert them with your favorite subtitle editor.

What I started out with was a file I made in SSA. I couldn't save as srt with that but used Subtitle Workshop to save it as srt. In doing so I lost all formatting.

I was able to make a s2s file which had both the top and bottom subtitles. Unfortunately when I tried to make a .sup file with that and add it to my DVD it caused problems whenever 2 subs needed to appear on the screen at the same time.

Again, I suggest you stick with SSA, but convert this time using VobSub's Resynch to convert to SUB:

Is Vobsub only for putting hard subs or removeable sub tracks? I didn't mention that I'm trying to do removeable subtitle tracks. Not so much because I need to take them off but because I don't want any quality loss from reendcoding my mpeg.

Is it even possible to have two subs go by at the same time with a DVD's removeable sub track?

No, save the SSA file to SRT, and then convert it to an SUP with SRT to SUP.

Have you done this? That's what I was doing which wasn't working. Converting to .srt removed any concept of location of the subtitle. I worked around that finally but ran into this can't have 2 subs at once problem.
