  1. When joining to DivX files, I get a 'Cannot append segment: The video streams have different data formats'.
How might I be able to fix this problem? I have made sure that I encoded both files to be of the same frame rate, size, etc., but I am unsure what they mean by saying they have different 'data formats'.
One file was made in Premiere from bitmaps and exported to Win AVI. The other was pulled off a DV cam. I've run both through Dr. DivX on the same settings and then am trying to join them with VDub and can't seem to correct this difference.

    Any ideas? Thanks a bunch.

It looks like the two files have different video or audio codecs. Open each file in turn and go to the menu: "File-->File Information" and note the Decompressor for video and compression for audio. These must match in both files for append to work.

Also, frame size and frame rate must be the same for video and sample rate and sample precision for audio must be the same.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  3. You could re-encode each in virtualdub to the same specs and then join, or frameserve to your encoder.

  4. Would there be a loss of quality on re-encoding the file? How do I know which has a better quality audio and/or video to encode the lower to the better AVI's level. I hope I am clear.

There will be loss in quality no matter what. You need to check the file information in Vdub to find out which one has the higher bitrate(s). By the way, there's no guarantee that re-encoding to the same specs will allow you to successfully join the two files.
