Yeah, I am afraid so. Alas, when you spend 5 years learning how to play with your fingers and trashing pick players, it's not easy to just turn around and throw all that away and use a pick. But I do like the sound of the pick attack. Also, I DO NOT like the sound of slap bass and it sure is hard to slap when you have a pick in your fingers.

Of course, my heroes are those bassists that play with their fingers but they sound like they are using a pick!!! And not because they have long fingernails either, doing that kind of stuff well is hard. Lightning fast Metal fingerstyle is my dream and goal. That is why Stever Harris is the BASSGOD.

Anyway do you prefer picks because you play bass?

The only song I play both slap and pick is 99 Red Balloons by Goldfinger. To switch I move the pick over and press it between my middle finger and my palm. It hurts with it digging into me, but I'm smooth now moving it around without dropping the pick.

I've played bass for about 7 years now. I've always used a pick. I use the think Dunlop picks 1.75mm-2mm. They are the best picks I've found for bass use.

I got my first bass in January 1998, so that would mean I have been playing for 6 years. I had played the mandolin and ukulele before this and was familiar with picking, so early on, I tried picking my Fender P-Bass. I remember I went to some small music store and paid way too much for a special felt bass pick (also made by Dunlop I believe). The guy explained to me that this pick was a BASS PICK, specially made, not for guitars. Anyway, I came back to my friends house and we started jamming. And I did not find the pick comfortable. I lost it soon after. That is another of my main problems with picks, I tend to lose them like crazy. You can never lose your fingers! Well, except with a jigsaw or something.

    Isn't 99 red balloons some 80s German band's song?

And not to go off on a complete bass tangent, but what kind of gear do you use- bass, amp, strings etc?

It was originally done by Nena in the 80s as an antimissle protest.

Peavy Milestone II, Fender BXR Sixty Bass Amp, Ernie Ball bass strings.

The picture of the bass is of the milestone III, but mine looks very close to that.

Do you use roundwound or flatwound strings. About two years ago, I switched to flatwounds and never looked back. They sound real good with a pick too.

    Currently use:
G&L Tribute SB-2 (awesome bass and sweet deal too)
    with Fender medium flatwounds

    Fender Mexican P-Bass
with Steve Harris Signature Rotosound flatwounds

Univox Hi-Flyer from 70s (needs to be fixed)
    with Fender short scale roundwounds

Hiwatt 15 watt practice amp (overdrives naturally )
Hartke 120 watt combo amp (needs to be fixed)

Arion cheap "Metal Master" distortion pedal

Kramer Focus 6 string guitar ($80 new! I still can't play guitar though)

My strings are roundwound. They feel better to me for the few times I do play slap(even though the flats are for jazz). Plus that was what I bought when I first got my bass, and I've never strayed from them.

I also have a Danelectro distortion pedal, but I seldom use it.

Techno / Trance music is a gay pop coulture thing in USA?
So we are all gay - like for you!
Well, it is natural in a way: Somehow, anything non rock / country turns one way or other "gay" in USA!
Here the Gay music is House: French house, New York Garage, UK Speed Garage, Inteligent jungle...
US style Rock music is out of fashion, so Brit Pop. The CD sales in Europe can show that easy.
Also, it is really fun to see how those image makers work worldwide.Placebo for example, is a Gay thing mostly for us in Europe (they continue the Suede tradition, don't mention their first hits (Nancy Boy, etc). Anyway, that's an interesting reading here. It seems that we have really splitted musicly too much!

Trance music a gay pop coulture! What a joke!

  12. Hmm... whats gay in Australia. Probably Kylie Minouge and other dance pop style tracks.

Trance and techno are the club/rave scene.
    Rock/Punk are big.
    Rap/Hip Hop are also big.
Pop was huge but is slightly going downhill.

Thats all I can think of at the moment.

That's interesting...but Somebody To Love is a cover of an old American tune written by Grace Slick (of Jefferson Starship/Airplane...same band who sang We Built This City)

I don't really like this song, it is a cheap cover.
But explains Will Hay's avatar photo, right?

guess it depends where your from to claim its unheard of....

finger eleven---best rock band that doesnt get nearly the air they deserve

alot of punk bands dont get the play they should...pennywise, pulley, millencolin, black flag, dropkick murphys..misfits never got the play they deserved. afi wasnt really heard of until they turned pop.

headbangers ball is back, alot of good bands are getting play again. but as far as heavy goes...cradle of filth, primer 55, machine head, fear factory, coal chamber, ill nino, killswitch engage, spineshank, type o negative...i could go on for awhile on this one

for techno check out bad boy bill, good stuff.

    rap...non phixion and jedi knights

sad that if it doesnt get played on mtv its unheard of....

Good radio station that plays all the alternate music and none of the MTV crap. Funded by the Government so it also has no ads and the DJ's aren't annoying.

If it's good catchy song that station will normally play it months before the commercial stations start plugging it on their stations as "brand new". Depending on the time you listen you'll also laugh your arses with some of the stuff they go on about.

Iron Horse ... blue-grass Metallica, currently working on blue-grass Ozzy

Metallica's new bassist is a bad-ass ... but I also think pick bass can be better.

Man. That cd was everywhere around here. It wasn't as good as the selftitled, but it was still a good cd.

Another band that should be bigger than they are:

They Might Be Giants. Flood may be one of the best cds ever.
