No flames please I have read everything but I have no experience with the recommended tools.
My mother wanted me to convert all here perry mason vhs tapes to dvd.
Wheeeeeeeeeeeee NOT but its mothers day. (make that a lot of days)
so I found DVD Xpress Video Capture for $49 and decided to give it a shot.
NO problems if I capture one episode at a time, starting and stopping and well its a 6 hr nightmare. But capturing them mpeg2 4mb creates a file that is 59 minutes long and 1.14 G .

    2 problems
    1) I don't want to watch the timer and capture 6 files from a tape. I want to get it all and hack it up.
    2) 4 files just miss fitting on a dvd.

right now I am using the the software that came with the device and its crude. 1.4G file cut off the last 9 minutes and end up with a 1.4G file.
    HUH

I can capture the shows in one file. 7 gig. Cut out the 6 episodes in an editor should be easy and fast.
    what software?

    I now have 6 files.
    what software to cut commercials?

I know there should be something out there that will let me hack up a file and it easy and fast to use?
    Yes there are a bunch.

But to the experts, if you were doing this...whats free and easy?

    if not free...cheap

reason I ask, its funny in the vote section of software it starts off what do you use, and ends up, what ever YOU use is wrong.

thanks big time for your help and thanks for reading this mess

  2. To chop up your files, if they are avi format (you don't say), then use virtualdub.

    Free AND easy.

    They are mpg 2 files.
seems that mpeg 1 or 2 is the only options with the supplied capture software.
the edit software that comes with it is
    Ulead VideoStudio 7.0 DVD (SE)

After trying the cut and save again. I start with a 1.4 gig file.
crop off 10 minutes and save the cropped file. its 1.4 gig as well.
I can't understand why it saves it out as the full format but is now 10 minutes shorter. but I assume its something to do with its linking.
file 0000 cropped now has a 0000-1 and if you try to delete either of them you are told that you are loosing the link.

so an edited file is still tied to the original I guess.

and no way to crop out of the middle, I assume that even if I did it would not be a stand alone file

womble mpeg-vcr works great for editing commercials out of mpeg files and is relatively fast. it's not free but there is a fully functional trial version that works for like 30 days or something.
