i capture my VHS tapes using my canopus 100 using WINDV then use tmpgnc to convert, then tmpgnc dvd authour to author, For the menu backgrounds i use stills captured from a roughly authoured output . but sometimes i cannot get a good still capture sometimes, ie it captures between two frames giving a blurred look to the still, but on the odd ocasion its fine. is this a problem that can be solved by adjusting a setting in WINDV or is it just a source tape problem or maybe a different setting in tmpgenc plus

Would you say your chances of getting a bad one are about 40% ?

You are probably having interlace and/or telecine problems.

Not much to do about it except capture several in a row and pick a good
    one.

Edit your capture in Virtualdub and then output as images, you're bound to get one to your liking. Or use TMPGENC, that outputs images too.

That's not pot luck it's 3:2 pulldown or telecine.
there are 2 mixed up frames out of every 5

edit: wait a minute , you should get 60% good ones

is there any way to avoid 3:2 pulldown or telecine or is it just a factor of VHS capture, by the way i always get perfect stills of storebought VHS tapes, why is that
