  1. I recently purchased a SOHC 812S from NewEgg. I got it primarily for backing up system and files. Thus far, the only thing I have done is copied some game files to a DVD that came with the drive. Anyhow, my question - I have seen alot of discussion concerning "firmware" upgrades. Do I need to do one? And, how in the world do you download anything from the Liteonit site? I have been trying for two days. I found the firmware upgrade for the burner I have (wasn't gonna install it until I heard from you folks), but I have had no luck at all downloading the file. Just seems to run and run. I use Roadrunner for internet and it's usually fast enough, but this is ridiculous. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks for the help.

  2. Yes,

The firmware in your burner is what lets you burn various brands of media, so you ALWAYS want to have the latest firmware, unless you want to have to buy costly blank media. Newer firmware will have the latest media codes in it's firmware media table. Older firmware may not have the correct info for new versions of blank DVD, so the burner may not even see the media unless it's present in it's firmware.

Here is the download link for the latest firmware for your 812 burner:

  3. Yes upgrade your firmware but disable DMA(read my guide below) and turn off all programs(ie virusscan, screensavers, etc) beforehand. One good thing about Lite-On is they frequently update their firmware and if you run into a problem you can easily flashback to a previous version.

    Hey, old timer,

Have you DL'd it yet. You said it ran and ran.

I couldn't DL a couple weeks ago because they changed the site to use only Internet Explorer, no Netscape, no Firefox, nothing but.

When I got clued in, seconds to DL.

    Give it a try.

    Cheers,

    George

If you're seeking more information on firmware, I suggest visiting RPC1.com and having a good read of all their forums (or at least the ones relevant to your drive). Part of their wisdom suggests that the latest firmware is not necessarily the best to have, but any questions you have about how the process is done can be answered there. I strongly recommend reading up on what the best media to use is, too.

  7. Thanks. I was finally able to download the file. And yes, the problem was Firefox. With IE it worked like a charm. Already installed. Thanks again.
