I am trying to re-encode a DVD to fit on a DVD-R. It's a Region 1 NTSC version of Douglas Sirk's Imitation of Life, which is not available in Region 2 or PAL. My DVD player plays NTSC disks, so I am just wanting to re-encode as region free so we can watch the disk we paid for.

I've done this before - lots of times - and never quite had this problem. After transcoding (with Minx Transcoder), the audio and video were out of sync from the start, by about a second or so, drifting to about a minute by the end. Transcoding problem, I thought. So, for troubleshooting purposes, I re-authored the disk with Sizzle using the original streams, the resulting disk image being the same as the original 6GB or so, and it's still out of sync.

What gives? The disk is very simple, just an MPEG-2 video stream and two channel AC3. I extracted the data with OSEx, but would YADE or MtR give different results? Is the problem with Sizzle?

The problem was with the transcoder. Try using MPEG2Works or something to transcode from NTSC to PAL.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

  3. The Minx transcoder does not have pulldown detection. Select the mpeg in ffmpegx and check its frame rate. Make sure that it is set correctly in the minx transcoder and start again. My guess is you kept it at NTSC 30 fps and not 24 fps during transcoding.

  4. I had a problem with a normal commercial dvd.

Using MTR, I ripped the "extract main feature" and the resulting disc was way out of sync (audio with video).

I did this twice with the same result.

Then I ripped again and did the "extract complete disc".

    SUCCESS!!

Are you extracting the "complete" files maybe?

  5. The fact that the synch drifted gradually makes me think it is a frame rate problem. Usually rip synch problems occur from offsets created by the initial titles etc. That can usually be shifted back with a little trimming.

I'll try MTR and see what I get. Thanks.

No, here was the problem: chapter 1 of the disk was a small file of 470KB, with no audio or video. But when I extracted with 0SEx it incorporated it into the complex 6GB+ VOB. Anyhow, using YADE it was easier to see that it was some sort of null file which was presumably offsetting the audio and video sync in some odd way.

Now it works fine, and we can emote to Douglas Sirk.
