Alright, I'm no stranger to encoding VCD/DVD and authoring them. I've got hundreds. Here's my dilemma.
My girlfriend and her inept friend need to do a music video, I've got all of the footage in my computer and they're coming over to edit it (god help me.) I capped at 4000k/sec, 640x480 mpeg1.
After it's edited, If I encode to a 352x240 mpeg1 file at 4000k/sec and resample the audio to 48000, should it play on a DVD player? Should I just do mpeg2 at Half-D1? I'm thinking the latter, but converting from mpeg1 to mpeg1 goes in faster than real time, while converting to mpeg2 takes a tad longer and i'm not goign to have any patience after hearing the two bitches argue.[/i]

DVD compliant MPEG1 is 352x240 @ 1,856 max. When using MPEG1 I use 1,850 CBR and 224K 48K audio.
I just capture a short clip MPEG1 640x480, CBR 4Mbps, 224k, 48k then converted it in Tmpgenc.
1) 352x240 MPEG1 @ 1,850 CBR, 224k, 48k. The video suffered a little quality loss. I could notice some blocking in faster moving areas which is probably from the reduced bitrate.
2)MPEG2, 352x480, constant quality CQ = 100%, 4Mbps, 224k, 48k, Tmpgenc 'motion search fast'. Quality wise I could not tell this file from the original file on my monitor.
The conversion to MPEG2 was faster than my MPEG1 conversion.
Good luck. -
yeah, i was messing with it for a little while. i ended up just doing everything full D1. The music video looks spectacular. This post is now rendered pointless. thanks for all who replied.
