Proper Threadjacking Technique

Today, we are going to discuss the topic of threadjacking. If you would, let's please look at Forum Rules/AUP for a moment...

In most cases, posting outside the Off-Topic forum requires that you stay within the context of the thread itself. However, after careful and exhaustive research, we here at the Ranch of Indolikaa have determined that threadjacking is a safe practice. We will now show you how to properly hijack a thread.

We will use a common question in the Newbie/General Questions forum as our example.

Hello! I just finished authoring my very first DVD with DVDit! LE and the filesize is huge! It's only a two-hour movie, but the final filesize was 7.0 GB! I have no idea what I did wrong. I captured the movie with my Dazzle DVC-II and I normally use TMPGEnc and DVD-lab, but I thought I'd try DVDit! LE because it had some cool menu options. Can anybody help me?

Now as you can see, this opening statement leaves the door wide open for a threadjacking. First and foremost, the poster states that this is their first attempt at using DVDit! LE to create a DVD. This would normally lead other membes to believe we have a true newbie online, which would result in the post being ignored.

However, the poster goes on to say they're proficient in TMPGEnc and DVD-lab, and that is a sign of not only a smart and high educated person, but somebody who IS NOT necessarily a newbie. Now the obvious response to such a post is, "Why in the **** would you want to use DVDit! LE to author a DVD?" However, as we are here to help people first and foremost, it would be more appropriate to answer the question first.

Hi. The problem you have is that your version of DVDit! LE transcodes the audio to PCM format automatically, with no option on your part to prevent it from doing so.

A simple answer to a simple question. Nothing more, nothing less. No personal feelings for how poor the product truly is. Nothing to suggest the thread is well on its way to spiraling out of control.

Now all the poster has to do is thank the member for their time and input, and the thread will die, and become a valuable resource for another newbie at some point in the future. The critical elements were established in this thread for a proper forum search. However, as you and I both know, it never dies. And here's why.

And the opening has been created for an appropriate threadjack! You see, all the poster really had to say was, "Thank you." There was really nothing more to be discussed. It would be obvious that the appropriate conclusion to this thread is the poster will go back to using DVD-lab, and the world will continue on its merry way. However, by doing this, the poster has given the veteran the opportunity to expand upon their knowledge base, and thus, make an opinionated statement that will bring attention to the thread.

It's a great program, and it can do anything DVDit! LE can do. If you really like DVDit! LE they do make a full version with all the bells and whistles called DVDit! PE, but I think you'll do just fine with DVD-lab.

And the door has been opened. You see, Indolikaa injected a combination of fact (DVDit! LE does come in a more robust edition) and personal feelings (he thinks the poster would do better staying with DVD-lab) into the discussion. Given that the poster's question was answered and the issue has been settled, any continued discussion is acceptable, even if the subject matter at hand changes.

This is an appropriate situation for a threadjacking.

I use DVDit! PE and have no real complaints myself. It's a pretty solid program.

Another veteran user has offered his opinion in the matter. First, he has confirmed that Indolikaa isn't talking out of his ass, and second, he has reassured the poster that another viable option exists.

I've used them both. I think DVD-lab is a better overall program because you can do a lot more with menus.

Now this is where you know you have carte blanche to continue on whatever path you choose. When a moderator enteres a thread and offers an opinon along the lines of discussion, the moderator is saying, "this thread is fine, I see no need to restrict it's access at this time."

TMPGEnc DVD Author is a much better progam for authoring, IMHO. It has a certified Dolby AC-3 encoder, which saves time during the authoring process

It only takes one ******* to send a thread in flames. And although such conduct is usually reserved for newbies whose sole purpose is to stir hate and discontentment, sometimes our veterans are just as guilty. Now at this point, we have only diverged from a simple question on PCM audio to a preference for authoring software.

Although this seems like a violation of forum rules, it isn't. Remember, the original poster's question was answered. What we have here is nothing mroe than a greeting amongst a couple of friends who share a common passion for the digital video hobby.

As you can see, properly done, a threadjacking can be a safe and legal way to enjoy yourself on videohelp.com While there are so many other possible situations where a proper threadjack can be initiated, you must remember that there are certain situations where it is not appropriate. Let us look at the worst situation for a threadjacking: the flame war.

I'd be happy to help you with that. Delete the file from your computer, wait until it comes out on DVD, and buy a copy of the movie.

Now don't be confused at this point. This is not a flame war. Jim has, in a very eloquent way, told the poster what he sould do with the file in question. Jim has correctly identified that a warez violation is in progress, and having already reported the thread, he has taken the initiative to help the poster accomplish his true goal. Which is, of course, to have a copy of Kill Bill 2 on DVD.

Still not a flame war. Indolikaa has made a factual statement about the poster in question, in regards to his mental character and his need for assistance. Don't be confused by this one, either. We have still not reached the point of a flame war.

Teegee is only asking a couple of simple questions at this point. While his tone might indicate otherwise, he is really only wanting to know two things: does the poster have any common sense (which is need-to-know, since it determines at what reading level future posts must be written at) and did he do his job as a new member, which is only asked of him to help make the community a better place. Again, no flame war in progress.

well inny nipples scared me! although that was weird all round, one was pierced so not allowed to be sucked in, the other was completely inside out.
