Well I'm doing ok on my PCs right now. One is a 3000+, the other a 2200+, got alot of hard drive space, you can never have ENOUGH, but I have alot. Both have 512mb DDR, both have ok video cards.

On that note I have decided that other then say eventually a dual layer burner I'm swearing off upgrading either computer any further. Instead I shall way for about 7 months and build a brand new from scratch PC and take advantage of all the new stuff currently in the pipe.

Because upgrading a comptuer is fun, but there is nothing like saving up $2500 to $3000 then building something that makes local villagers run in fear.

Faster/Better DVD Burner.

I have just upgraded my CPU from a celeron 1700 to a P4 3.06B, added 512 RAM to existing 512, added Soundblaster Audigy instead of onboard, added 2 X 200GB Hard Drives in a removable tray, and to top it off, purchased an ADVC-100. I am set !

The next step is to upgrade my Pioneer 106 to a DL burner.

I agreeing with all of you on new pc, therefore in order to save money and still get what I need, I built the pc. Yes, you might say I must have some knowledge or friend to help or else. To be honest, this was my 1st time after I have done six months research to insure minimum mistake I will make. Just remeber one thing, stick with brand name, you will not regret. In the last 6 months Ive added a 120GB HDD, replaced my Pioneer 104 with an NEC ND-1300A, upgraded to an ATI Radeon 9600SE, and moved up to 1GB of DDRSD Ram. Ive got 1 PCI slot left (Well, 2 if I get rid of my 56K Modem) and theres not much else I can do, or want to do with this. Maybe add a capture card at some point or a better sound card...I know my 1.7GHZ processor is a bit dated now, but this PC still does what I need of it. I'm really in no rush to build a new one, but when that day comes I won't need too many extra parts to complete it luckily.

Forgot to share with you what I have. I built mine on Dec 2003 with total cost: $1,200. My pc has Intel motherboard 875pbz (latest), 2.6 C Gh processor, 2.0 gb ram (yes 2.0 gb ram), 240 gb HDD, video card ati 9600 xt, audio card 128 mb, 3 fans, inernal modem+ethernet card (to communicate with my old pc), xp home win, Norton utility. The wonderful thing about this? I know exactly what my pc has.

Then I'll be scoping out a professional Matrox card.

Same here... Where's thCPU upgrade? That's one reason I stay with AMD. Don't need to change the mobo or ram too often.

I'm at an 1800+ but stuck at a 133/266fsb mobo. The best I can find right now is the 2400+ with the odd 2600+ out there. Maybe I'll just swap mobo's with my kids. They've got a 333/400fsb...then I could get into the Barton cores.

Built myself a PC last last Autumn with video editing in mind.

P4 2.8Ghz 1gb of RAM, DVD Burner, separate CD Burner and DVD drives.
Three hard Drives 120 + 80 + 120 GB (the last of which is dedicated for video recording. 17" TFT monitor.
Motherboard will take any future P4 so however high up that goes will probably be my next upgrade, but that would not be worth it in my opinion until I can get a significant upgrade. There is no real point unless I can get a whole 1Ghz extra.

A faster DVD burner for future maybe too, but seeing as my Pioneer 106 is still fairly new I would really want to get at least a year's use out of it.

Right now I've got a Thunderbird 850mhz with 384MB SDRam, Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO, 80GB+30GB HDDs, Creative SB16, Pioneer 104, LG 8400B.

It still does what I need it to do. School cost too much. I can probably cope with it for another year.

yes, I am a techno-geek, but I haven't bought it yet. I am unemployed. My former employer wrote hot paychecks and bounced one of my paychecks. I plan to get one though

I need more HD space. Encoding speed is excellent with my XP2500 and CCE/AviSynth, so new PC is the alternative for TMPGEnc users, just that its still slow with next years Pentium5 8Ghz. Its a hell of a lot cheaper and faster to learn a few basic AviSynth functions...

Not true, I'm afraid. I was once a Mac user, and a happy one at that. My wallet forced me to turn to the Dark Side, and I've happily been building PCs for other people for a year now. It's much easier owning a PC, I'm afraid.

However, when I get money I will do what Flaystus is up to - save up and buy the velociraptor of the PC world.

My current machine is about six weeks old now, and it's brilliant. I won't need to completely upgrade it for years to come, I hope.

cheaper too.... There is nothing wrong with macs. I love pc's though. I have messed with them all my life. I dealt with a mac back in junior-high. I have been building pc's for 5 years, and wouldn't have it any other way. I just love the holy wars that break out between mac and pc users. Either side will tell you theirs is better than the other. Neither one is superior. The only factor I ever see is cost.

I just bought a 200 GB 7200 RPM western digital drive with the 8MB of cache, to use as a dedicated capture drive.

However, soon after installing it, I came to realize that I also needed a new power supply. This realization came to me when I began to experience intermittent lockups/reboots after installing the new drive.

It seems that a 300w PSU cannot handle 5 hard disks, a dvd burner, a dvd-rom, 4 expansion cards, 2 fans, and of course the motherboard itself. Gee, who woulda thunk it.

I ordered a nice new Antec 400w power supply from newegg. But since I am such a dumbass, my capuring/burning system is pretty much useless until it arrives, as it seems i have permanently damaged my old power supply by overloading it. I am typing this post on my laptop so please excuse any typos.
