  1. Hi

Is a capture device like the DVREx or the Canopus ADVC100, etc needed to capture DV quality video from a camcorder onto my pc?

Or can I just use my firewire card and do it?

What major benefits are there from using the capture devices?

ALSO, is there a DV tape player out there to purchase that just plays the dv tape so you can use that instead of the actual dv camcorder?

  2. Just use the firewire, i'm pretty sure there is no advantage of going from DV cam to capture device to computer.

all you need to capture dv from your camcorder is a firewire port. devices like the canopus advc-100 can be used for this, but they are mainly for converting analog video to dv. and they still use a firewire port.

as for a standalone dv tape player, they are out there, but they are very expensive. i use a jvc that has an svhs and a dv player built in, and i believe it cost about 1 grand. so they are not very cheap. if you just want a player, try to find an old dv cam that can play the tapes, maybe if the lens is broken or something, it can still play and transfer

Any firewire card should work OK.
