  1. i really dont want the adware divx player, but so far all of the codecs that are supposed to allow me to view avi files in wmp have not worked.

    also, i am having trouble opening avi files in tmpgenc....i want to convert them to mpg but i cant seem to even open them in the program.

    FFDSHOW is a "TMPGEnc-friendly" mpeg-4 deoder that might help. If you still have problems playing a particular avi after installing it you'll need to analyze the file with G-spot to determine which codec you need to install. There are dozens of different avi codecs so it's best to only install what you need.
