I think an external drive is great- if you need another drive and don't have room for an internal one.
I have 4 internal drives- one dual DVD, 1 CD writer, 1 DVD ROM and 1 CD ROM. It might be too much if you don't have a big enough power supply, but I've never had any problems.
And why a serial cable? It would be much cheaper to get a controller card than an external drive. -
well my two different writters are hooked up on secondary ide
and two hard drives on primary
and my board has two serial connecters so i just use the convertor it came with from ide to serial hehe,
but the drive i wont have to pay it will be a warranty exchange at futureshop here in canada, the same drive
hp 420i but the external instead 420e both being a nec 2500 -
I imagine that the drive on the serial cable is pretty slow. You can pick up an ATA controller card for less than $40 (US). The last one I bought was off eBay- it cost $20 including postage.

Internal for me. An external would be just one more thing I could spill beer all over....
