I am very soon to be getting a DivX/MPEG4 DVD player, and I've basically narrowed it down to three (3) choices:
    LiteOn LVD-2002
    Momitsu V880/880N
    Philips DVP642

I basically threw out things like the RJ Techs, since they have gotten very mediocre responses here. I have seen SOME good reports, but the 3 above just seem to be of better all-around quality, from what people say.

Now, the setup is really nothing. I just have a regular old TV for now, no HD or component input or digital or anything. Maybe some day I will upgrade my TV, but for right now, its no home theater or anything. Basically, I want a good DVD player, doesn’t have to be Marantz quality or anything, but I want a decent picture, at least. My main concern is for it to play lots of formats, anything I throw at it, and be of good build and output quality.

I’ve heard mostly positive things about the V880, mostly positive things about the DVP462, although its pretty new so who knows?, and mixed things about the LVD-2002. whats the picture quality like on the DVP? What do I choose?!?!?

I just bought the dvp642 a few weeks ago . . .and so far I love it. Only 3 complaints about it:
    1. It seems to have problems with older divx files such as divx3 - the video plays but not the audio.

    2. When the player gets confused (hitting the next chapter button multiple times too quickly) it shuts down

    3. After scanning through a divx movie at 8x, when you hit play directly it SOMETIMES skips to a completely different section of the movie

Numbers 2 and 3 don't happen that often.

The pro's definately outway the cons with this machine:
    1. Macrovision free out of the box
    2. Plays +R/+RW/-R/-RW
    3. Plays mpeg1 and 2, divx, and xvid
    4. Easily made region free by keeping the tray open and hitting 7,8,9, ok, and then 0

For the 70 dollars I paid, I'm very happy with what I got.

  3. I thought the DVP had the worst video picture I've seen yet from a DVD player. You can read my review in the long thread about the 5 thread or so. It suffers from what I believe they call "black crush" shadows that are dark and should have gradations just have a rather solid black look. It is cheap though. In www.avsforum.com they have nothing but good things to say about the V880, of course you pay allot more then the DVP ($260). You could go to Target and try the DVP (they have a 90 day return policy), with the V880 you have only two on line sources to choose from with a 15% return charge I believe. the V880 does regular firmware upgrades.

The upside to the V880 and Lite-on is if the drive goes bad, you can replace it with a regular PC DVD drive (I'm pretty sure).

  4. Wait for the Momitsu 880-N

The wireless ethernet function will be a very nice feature.

Make that two choices, since the LVD-2002 is no longer available for all intents and purposes (though you can find & overpay for it on Ebay, or some very overpriced websites...)
Ethernet (n): something used to catch the etherbunny
