    Hi,

I have some old mpg files that I want to convert to xvid. The mpg files aren't the best quality, and I was wondering if there was a way to figure out which bitrate would be best to use. I don't want to encode them at too high of a bitrate, because that would increase the filesize without an increase of quality.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I haven't been able to find an answer to my question anywhere.

    Thanks
    Terry

Thanks for the info, but now I have another problem. I downloaded the program, installed and got an error saying I needed the file MSSTDFMT.DLL. I had already installed the required runtimes, but I went ahead and reinstalled them. When that didn't work, I manually placed the previously mentioned .dll in my windows/system and windows/system32 directories with no luck. I even tried putting the filename in caps with the extension in lowercase, and vice versa. Nothing seems to work.'

I tried looking on the official homepage, but I can't read whatever language it is in, I thought russian, but babelfish won't translate it.

I noticed on this site, they said the only complaint was getting the program to install.

If anyone knows the secret to getting this prog to work, could you please let me know?

    Thanks
    Terry

I don't have a solution for you but you could use the DVDRhelp Bitrate Calculator in the meantime. Just select "Divx" as type, even though you're using Xvid. You'll also need to adjust the Xvid codec configuration for bitrate instead of video size.

I found a site that lets you download the .dll but I have no idea where you are supposed to put so try at your own risk.
