  1. I have backed up the movie "Master and Commander" using DVDDecrypter and then DVDShrink 3.1 with Nero. Everything works great except for the dialogue. The dialogue works when I fast forward at 1.5x but when it is just playing it doesn't. I only put DTS sound on the disc and took out all subcaptions. Do I need Dolby 5.1 on there for the dialogue??
    Thanks

I noticed this myself but was using the ac3 track. For me it happened because I was outputting the sound as analogue using composite cables from the dvd player to a ac3/dts digital amp that was set to 'speaker 2' (second set of speakers, stereo only).
With this setup I got sound but no dialogue until I pressed the audio button on my dvd remote to toggle from 5.1 digital to stereo.
BUT, I believe I was getting the the no dialogue sound because I have the dvd audio connected with both the optical digital and composite analogue cables into the same input selector on the amp.

Phew. If that makes sence to you ... good. I'm still trying to figure out if it makes sence to me.

I discovered this by accident testing my dvd burns late at night using the tv and 2 speakers so I didn't wake anyone in the house.

Sorry I should attempt to answer your question: I don't believe you need the ac3 soundtrack because dts does contain a very good dialogue channel. So it makes no sence at all that you would get every channel except the centre channel with your encoding.
Check that the centre speaker is connected properly.

  3. Sounds to me like he stuck DTS as the ONLY soundtrack. If you don't have a DTS decoder (i.e. in a receiver) it won't work. Should've been Dolby 2.0 or 5.1.
