Bitrate Settings

Iam using dvd2svcd to convert dvds to svcd or vcds. I would like to know how to set the bitrate so my 135 movie will split liek this
Disk 1 = 700 mb ( this is where i want to make change coz dvd2svcd outputs a 743 or 764 mb file in which i cant add a motion menu.)
Disk 2 = 740 mb
disk 3 = 740 mb

Hi nirbhayn,

The filesize is a function of the length (in time) of the footage, and the bitrate.

As you're converting to SVCD or VCD, the bitrate is fixed as per the spec for these. This can be found under the "What Is" section at the top left of the page.

This only leaves you the time to adjust to get the filesize you want. Refer to the DVDRHelp Bitrate Calculator for working out the timings - probably "Advanced" mode will be better.

I didnt get you there, can u please explain a bit more. or how do i set it in the bitrate tab so that DVD2SVCD outputs me 700 mb files insted of 750 ot 763.

Use a bitrate calculator to figure out the correct bitrate for your file's length and desired file size, then plug the bitrate value into DVD2SVCD. You can find a calc in the tools section.

OK, from your original post, I'll assume you wanna make SVCDs as the quality is better than VCD. The facts:

Length: 135mins
Filesizes: 700mb + 740mb + 740mb = 2180mb

So, in the DVDRHelp Bitrate Calculator (or another of your choice, but the functionality might be different):

1. Click on "Advanced Mode"
2. In "Video Length" put: "0 hours 135mins" (from above)
3. In "Type" select "SVCD"
4. In "CDs" select 1 x "Custom"
5. In "Custom Size" enter 2180 (from above)
6. Select the "Audio Bitrate" that DVD2SVCD will be using - I've assumed the default for the bitrate calculator of 224kbps in this example.

This gives you a calculated bitrate of 1978kbps. However, this only takes the "MPEG/Author overhead = 42Mb" and "ISO = 5Mb" into account only once. This will be the same for each of your three discs.

So, you need to subtract double (2 extra discs, 3 in total) each of these figures from your total file size: 2180 - 2x(42 +5) = 2086.

Plug this back into the "Custom Size" field, and I believe this will provide the bitrate figure you need to use to get the filesizes you want - or it'll be pretty close.

If anyone spots a flaw, please correct me.

You can't do it in dvd2svcd. You can specify the bitrate, spread over the number of disks, but you cannot get the first at 700mb and the next two at 740.
I would split the avi file into 3 parts, and THEN encode each separately at the desired bitrate to get the filesize you want.
The 135 minute movie, spread over 3 disks, would be 45 minutes each.
If you make the first one 40 minutes, to get 700mb, the bitrate is 2169.
The next two are going to be 47.5 minutes each, at 740mb, gives a bitrate of 1906.
Adjust up or down as you see fit. This also takes into consideration a 224khz audio file, 14mb authoring overhead but not 5mb ISO.

so your saying that use programs like Dr DIvx to convert that movie 2 avi and then convert it to vcd in file size i want. but insted of converting it to avi what if i make a project in dvd2avi and then use the project file as the video source and the output audio file as my audio soruce, i have done this before but the quality is not as good as dvd2dvcd. do you think the option you suggested will give same quality as dvd2svcd.

To avoid yet another conversion, loss in quality, you could use dvd2avi's project. Quality should come more from bitrate, and less from the software used. My apologies for not reading carefully the first time, and mucking about with avi's.
I think your best option may be to have dvd2svcd encode the whole thing to one big mpeg, then split it in Womble (or something similar) to the sizes needed, and then author.
