I guess this question has been asked before but I haven't found it through the 'Search' or 'Guides' etc. Hope I'm in the correct place in the forum!

I'm currently producing 30-sec clips of wildlife from analogue video and wonder if there is any software for editing individual AVI frames. Often I find dust-spots on backgrounds and would like to edit them out using 'clone' tools, as in Photoshop. If anyone knows of any resources I would be grateful.

The video paint module in Ulead Mediastudio Pro is, as it's name suggests, a painting program for video. I'm not sure if it is included as part of the free download trial version though. See if you can get hold of an earlier version to the current one (currently on version 7, I use version 6.5), it has been there since version 5.

if there are only a few, you could export the video to a bmp image sequence using Virtualdub, clean up the frames that need cleaning in Photoshop, and then re-assemble the avi file.

but at 30 frames per second, if you have 15 seconds or more to do this, it can get tedious.

how much action is there in the area where the dust spots occur? there might be another solution, I've got to see if I can dig up the tutorial...

My issue is exactly what this topic is about...

I am trying to clean a short glitch in a DV AVI capture, and it seems to make sense to isolate the several bad frames and use a photo cloning tool as you would with a BMP (the glitch is definitely on the source as I tried several times to recapture the same footage). Because it is DV AVI, VirtualDub will not open it. Is there another method other than VirtualDub, or should I just convert it to uncompressed AVI and work with that (or will that result in quality loss?).

Aviceda, since you posted your question, have you found a best method for cleaning an AVI frame? Housepig's idea makes perfect sense --but, do you lose any quality when saving an AVI frame as a BMP, and further when re-assembling it as an AVI? I was wondering if just converting the AVI to MPG "I frames" and working with those might work too.

Will try all these things this weekend, but was hoping someone has found the best solution, any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks all.

    1) Virtualdub will open DV avi if you download and install the free Panasonic DV codec
