I have a computer with about the same specs as you, and i run other programs while i encode, and it does take a little longer, but i haven't had any serious problems with it.

  3. whenever i need to use the computer while encoding, i just set the priority of tmpgenc to low priority.

It allows me to do what i need to do and then when i'm done, i just change it back.

  6. Modest machine (Athlon 2400 XP+, 1G of memory). Currently running Virtualdub processing a 10G avi file encoded in MJPEG format, frameserving to mainconcept to convert to mpeg2 (running MC at lower than normal priority), while at the same time recording another show off TV using IUVCR (720x576) and reading this web site.

No frame drops and the browser is working fine

    YMMV I guess
