If a disc burns great at 4X, does that mean it burns even better at 1X? Does the burn speed affect how solidly the pits colors are changed?

  2. I don't think it makes much difference. A faster burner has a more powerful laser in it so it burns the pits in much the same as a lower speed would. I assume that when you select a lower speed on a faster drive, it reduces power to the laser to prevent overburning - if that exists - the dye.

I think the lower the speed, the less chance there is of your drive making a mistake or running out of buffer etc. and making a bad burn. However, I haven't had any problems with my Pioneer DVR-106 and BulkPaq media (Princo dye, cheaper media) burning at the full 4x.
