class not registered

i have downloaded a file with mpeg extention.
whem i am trying to open it with windows media player 9,i am getting a message "class not registerd".
i am using windows98 SE and i dont have any other problems openning avi or other mpg files. how can i open it ?

try opening the file using virtualdub or virtualdubmod. click on file=> file information.

Window98 SE..... If I remember right it's probably because it's an mpeg2 video and you need to install an mpeg2 codec. Try the tools section of this site, I seem to recall a free mpeg2 codec that works with window98. It's been a couple of years but I'm pretty sure the window player doesn't natively recognize mpeg2 files. Hope that helps.

Try using PowerDVD or WinDVD or other DVD player to open your mpeg.
