  1. I have noticed that I can change the .vob extension to .mpg and it will play in some applications. However, if you try to import it into a video editing application I usually get the message "...unsupported format". Is there some kind of 'header' or something that needs to be changed? If so, how?

  2. Multiplexing is what makes a vob and it's done in the authoring process.

Demultiplexing gets you the elementary streams (MPEG file, Audio, Subtitles).

I know that Vegas Video accepts VOB files. Which program are you trying to use VOBs directly in?

Vobedit can demultiplex into elementary streams.

Mpeg video wizard and TMPGEnc DVD author can accept VOB's for editting.

  4. Since a Vob file can contain more than one audio stream and subtitles simply changing the extention to .mpg doesn't look like such a good idea. I suppose the standard technique is to DeMultiplex the video stream and your desired audio stream from the vob file, then Multiplex them into a MPEG file. Tmpgenc is my choice of programs for this.

    Good luck.

  5. That explains why the changed files are sometimes in another language. Yes, I could open .vob in VEGAS, but it only loads part of the file (I suppose to the first chapter break).

I was just trying to save a little time.

    Thanks.
