I've heard that there are standalone DVD players that can play back DivX videos. But I have no idea how I would author such a DivX CD. I guess I'd just put the DivX file on it and it would work? anyone know about this?

You can run a search for a list of mpeg-4 DVD players by clicking on the "DVD Players" link on the left and checking off "Divx/Xvid/MPEG-4". All you have to do is burn the avi's as data CD's or DVD's.

okay, so if a data CD / data DVD is enough, that's fine. I hope they develop this, as I'd like to have the good old 'add chapters' feature with it.

That feature is lacking as none of the "containers"( avi) supports it. Mastroka might and newer mpeg4 codecs might, but I think divx/xvid has an unstoppable momentum by now so any newer players will have to support these as well as any new variations (nero mpeg4 maybe, or winslows video). Just burn your files to disk and insert into player.. thats it!

The OGM container supports chapters but to date there are no players(that I know of) that accept .ogm files.
