Problems writing to DVD-R disks

I am having problems writing ripped DVD movies to DVD-R disks. I have tried using DVD Decryptor and DVD Clone, then DVD Shrink and Nero 6. It always aborts (Nero states "Illegal Disk). If I use Roxio to copy a previously burnt disk to the same DVD-R, it works fine. No probelms with DVD+R disks. I have also tried my writer with the same softwrae on a different PC and it works fine on both DVD-R and DVD+R formats. I am using a Freecom FX 50 external writer with a Packard Bell laptop. The problem occurs on both USB2 and firewire connections. Please help.
