  1. I originally had problems viewing xvid files with windows media player so someone suggested using directshows ffdshow codec, This worked but now I have an xvid movie with AC3 that I want to burn to a vcd but when I load the file into virtualdub to take out the audio it tells me Directshow codec is no good for virtualdub and I need a VFW codec to do this. If I load this codec I can no longer view xvid's with my media player. Am I missing something?

I had a problem recently and I actually had to uninstall ffdshow to get it to work correctly.

I have 2 PCs and the file worked perfectly on one and not the other. The only difference I could find between the two was that the one that wouldn''t play the file had ffdshow installed.

I would suggest uninstalling it using add and remove programs.

You can easily reinstall if it doesn't cure your problem.

    Try installing Koepi's xvid codec.

  4. Koepi's codec was the one I originally had installed. With this codec I was unable to view Xvid files in Media Player I would just get a bunch of green blocks. I checked the files with Gspot and it said they were Xvid and that I had the correct codec installed but still no go. Is there another program I can use instead of Virtualdub that works with the ffdshow codec?

  5. again, I hate ffdshow. One option you can try is using fourcc changer to change your XviD fourcc to DivX. You can then playback with the DivX codec (which I like) and you should be able to load into VDub.

why not follow andy's suggestion and uninstall ffdshow. It could be you could have two codecs fighting for default status to read xvid files. If you have the latest xvid codec, that would probably be the way to go.

Listen to Andy and gitreel. Uninstall ffdshow and download the latest xvid codec. Since your video has AC3 audio you will need the AC3 ACM Decompressor found in the tools section. After you install it open vdub. Choose audio>full processing mode. Then choose audio>compression>AC3 ACM Decompressor. This will allow you to extract the audio as a wav file.

  8. This is where my problems started. I uninstalled the ffdshow and installed the latest xvid codec and I was no longer able to view the xvid movies with Media Player the Ac3 audio is no problem but the video is just green blocks. This is what prompted me to install ffdshow instead and it solved the problem but then I couldn't open the file in virtualdub because ffdshow is not a vfw codec apparently. Could the windows media player be the problem? I have the latest updated version.
