I bought a bunch of DVD Movies but my Kids have already scratched up a couple of the DVD's. Is it Legal for me to make backup copies of my DVD'
s before the kids destroy the originals? What software program would I use that is the easiest to get a Like-For-Like DVD copy?
Thanks
Medman

This has been discussed many times before(do a search). In the US the answer is NO,in order to make a copy you have to break CSS encryption which is illegal under DMCA.Someday "Fair Use"(do a search)of DVD's will be argued in front of the US Supreme Court.
Baldrick et al is commited to fair use if you read the forum rules. 8)
BTW...look to the left for guides how to backup a DVD. -
What if a European family moves to the US carrying all their belongings (original DVD's + backups, etc...), and gets caught?
You stop me again whilst I'm walking and I'll cut your fv<king Jacob's off. -
I think that falls under a customs issue(?) Similar to legal hash in Amsterdam that you can't bring over to non-legal countries. Even within a country (U.S.), if you marry a 14-year-old where it's legal, you'll get busted (most likely sent back) if the age of consent is higher.
Time for me to bow out, as I've strayed way to far off. But you get the point -
that was very insightful supreme. I haven't even thought of that but you are right.

try using this method....
1. dvd decrypter (rip)
2. dvd2one (fits dvd to dvdr)
3. copytodvd (burn program)What We Do In Life, Echoes In Eternity.... -

We're not talking about peru. We are talking about the U.S. This kind of stuff ends up on Jerry Springer all the time. The people on there are a bunch of freaks.

Anyone who is prepare to go on Jerry springer or its UK equivalent (I guess Trisha is the closest "rice and pea") is in need of urgent mental evaluation.
Sorry for the outburst but I have just finished a bottle of vodka with redbull and needed to vent. Just watched Man C beat newcasle as well, Leeds are fucked. -

It's all right waiting for D/L burners to come out , but what of the price of D/L media? Have we had any reports on the expected cost yet.
BTW mrebman When backing up a DVD the majority , I think , do a movie only back up and don't bother with the menus and extras . This allows for maximum room for the movie ie best quality you can get for the movie on a 4.7GB DVD-R or +R. -
andy, from what I have read the discs will be about 5 dollars each
-
They'll come down. It used to be $50 here for a box of ten DVD-Rs. Now it's down to $70 for 25. Tis all relative.
I'd sit back and wait a year after the Dual Layer recorders come out so that a) the bugs are worked out and b) the price comes down to a reasonable level. I was rewarded for my patience when I acquired my GSA-4040B for $198.
It all depends on whether you want to be part of the bread-and-butter of the computer industry by being an Early Adopter, of course. -
We could do with a currency converter on this site.
$5 a disc , I guess thats about £3 - £3.50 a disc in my money which is a lot. I currently pay £0.40 for a DVD-r now thats probably around $0.75.
Don't think I'll be rushing out to buy them.
Not sure how many Australian $ to the £UK or $US , but agree that its better to wait till things settle and any probs are ironed out. -

It has been at 80 US cents, 45 US cents, and more recently 74 US cents, all in the last six or seven years.
The cheapest I can get a DVD-R without going to another city at the moment is $2.80, and that's if I buy spindles of 25. Which is about 1.14 UK pounds. -

Brand? Manufacturer? Burn speed?
I must remind that I am in a town where people seem to think competition means two stores carrying the same product being within two hours of each other. I pray fervently for a day when JB Hi-Fi comes to this town and puts all of the record stores out of business. -
I can send you the sellers details if you like. He's a decent guy and it will only cost you postage and packaging, which will save you heaps.

That would be marvellous. Given how many discs I have to backup, it could save me a fortune. But I must ask once again, what's the brand and burn speed?
-
The brand is called "Spider' and they are 4x, but I think he sells other brands too. Here is the web site. Email him and ask for details.
