I am going to get rid of my sony dru-500ax and replace it with either the Nec 2500A or the Lite-On SOHW-812S
Is there anything I should know before chosing one of these 2 drives?
Also, if anyone owns one of the two, can you let me know if you're pleased with it or if you ran into any problems?
any help is appreciated.

unless they are capable of burning to duel-layer media, i probably wouldn't buy either of them. ben-q and probably other dvd burners are capable of burning to duel layer media at about the same price

Forget the NEC, the firmware sucks with it and makes it not work with most brands of DVD's. Lite-On has pretty good firmware now, so that's a much better choice.
As far as duel layer, that's down the road a bit yet, but Pioneer demonstrated a regular DVR-106 or 107 at the CES that had duel layer firmware in it, so it looks like many burners will simply need a firmware upgrade to work burn duel layer. There is no duel layer media out now anyways. -
duel layers are already on the market for about the same price as a regular dvd burner. when the media comes out, you might as well have a burner that can burn them

I like BenQ its done well on CATS scans and burns alot of 4x + media at 8x (with no hacked firmware). It's also the faster 8x + media of two (nec benQ not sure about the lite-on). The NEC with hacked firmware burns almost anything, but isn't quite as fast on + media, but will do 8x - where the BenQ does 4x -. If you can wait two more weeks NEC and Lite-on might have some DL burners out. But if you have to have one now then:
If you can settle for + media and want 8x and the best quality then the BenQ DW822A for under $100 and its DL upgradeable.
If you want + and - 8x on both then the NEC.
If Kprobes are important then then the 812. -
I have a pioneer 106 and I have had no problems with it you might want to consider that. Also could we all use the language we have agreed upon. DUAL layer is coming DUEL layer will never get here. there is just no market for a burner or media that walks ten paces turns and fires!!!
The real answer lies in completely understanding the question!
