Recently, a friend of mine purchased the Region 4 PAL version of Mulholland Drive, a film that I have not seen before. You can imagine his shock when he played the disc only to find that there were absolutely no Chapter Stops during the entire 141-minute length. Ever since, I have been trying to find a way to make a backup with Chapter Stops so he can navigate a little easier.

Which brings me to the meat of the matter. While there seem to be plenty of guides available for inserting Chapter Stops into camcorder footage to be burned to DVD, there is nothing explaining a procedure to rip the contents of a DVD-Video, insert Chapter Stops, and then burn it to DVD-R. I've been hitting my head on the wall with IFOedit all day, and quite frankly I am not inclined to use it again without a step-by-step guide.

I'm not sure if you want to keep the original menus, but some authoring softwares will let you take the ripped content and put in chapter points (TMPGEnc DVD Author comes to mind).

Also, unless chapter-less is standard for that version, maybe he can return the video in exchabge for a copy with chapters.

Thanks, Supreme, I'll give both of those points a try. I suspect, however, that the Chapter-less format is standard for this territory, as the menu on the disc also has no mention of them anywhere (nor does the cover art).

Ah, I found some info here. Seems that Lynch, not thinking the movie was odd enough, requested that there be no chapter stops.

I'm in the process of doing that now. Here's to hoping it actually works.
