  1. Right, after much research, i haven't been able to find anyone with this problem :

i use Tmpenc to convert my movies to kvcd, using the KVCD templates from KVCD.net.

i check the resulting .mpg file on BS plaxer and the ratio is kept correct (these are 16:9 movies).

now, when i play these on my DVD player, the picture ends us VERTICALLY squashed, meaning the figures are all long and narrow and difformed (talking about long faces )... driving me nuts

i believe i've been converting the files correctly. so is there a way i could keep the original ratio

    Thanks for your help

for info, i live in europe, but my dvd player is zone free, the movies i have problem with are PAL .avi files.

  2. It sounds like a pixel aspect ratio problem. Maybe you know this already, but a TV has rectangular pixels and a computer has square pixels. The template that you're using may not account for this.

Try resizing your source's vertical resolution to be 90% of the original. Take your height and multiply it by .9 and use that resolution instead. Don't change your output res (720x576).
    Happy to be here.

Did you set the video arrange in advanced settings to 'Full Screen (keep aspect ratio) If you didn't you will stretch your picture you chould be able to see it correct as soon as you start to encode in the preview window.

  4. thanks for your input!

Andyp 1, that's the point, the aspect ratio of the created .mpg file is respected on my computer, but ends up stretched up on my TV.

maybe something like this could do the trick : is there a way to keep the film screen the same (meaning it is 16:9, so like a long horizontal rectangle) on the computer, yet applying 2 blac k bands on top and under the original movie, so that on TV it just has to give a 1:1 ratio and the trick is done ?

Gonzalimator, i'll try you trick, it will take a little time for the weekend madness has just began...

    i'll keep you posted
