Some quick questions

I recently started backing up some mpeg4s to divx and I have a few questions I hope some people can answer:

1. In order to make standalone dvd player discs, can I just burn the divx files to the disc like a data dvd?
2. Is it possible to have chapters and/or menus in divx files?
3. In Gknot, what's the difference between 1xvbr-mp3 and 2xvbr-mp3?

1. No. Please read the guides on conversion. You will be needing this section:

DVDs use MPEG-2 compression and DivX uses MPEG-4. They are totally different, and you need to convert (transcode) between them. I would recomment TMPGEnc because it's a decent encoder and there are a lot of guides for it, so you will have support.

2. It is possible to have chapters if you encode with Vidomi and use Vidomi Enhanced AVI. You will only be able to use the chapters in compatible players.

3. I'm not sure on this one, but I would think it's referring to the number of MP3 audio tracks you will be muxing with the final video file. Say you wanted to convert a DVD to DivX and you wanted both the standard soundtrack, and the Director's Commentary. I believe this option would allow you to achieve this.

Here's where I should probably make you aware of a few things about these forums... I'm not having a go at you, so don't worry!

I can understand you asking questions two and three, but please read the articles and guides located to the left of your screen to get information before posting. This will save you the wait while someone searches for you, and it saves me time too!

1. If your DVD player can also play Divx/Mpeg4 files, Yes you can burn
those divx as iso CD/DVD data.

2. Chapters and menus are not yet well supported by most Divx players.
Even mpeg2s have to be wraped into vob then into ifo
to support chapters point and menus.

3. I think the 1xvbr and 2xvbr refer to video encoding pass, 1 time vbr
and 2 time vbr and the mp3 refers to audio stream type it will be
muxed with.

Just been into GKnot and checked it out - there are options for 2xCBR MP3 too. You wouldn't do a two-pass encode on a CBR file. Also, the final encode setup has two audio tabs, which is what leads me to believe that it is for multiple audio stream support and is not multi-pass audio.

I have never heard of a multi-pass audio encoder anyway, much though I like the idea it obviously offers very little or even no advantage.

Thanks you your replies. Im sorry I was unclear about 1, I meant for making disks for use in standalone divx players.

One other question, is it possible to add the audio tracks without any compression (ie. normal 5.1 AC3 or DTS), or is there some other way to achieve 5 channel sound?

Gordian Knot can definitely mux an AC3 (surround) stream with an AVI, and perhaps AutoGK (AutoGK is the automated, easy one) can too. You just disable audio processing and you've got it.

A number of people have posted stating that their divx players couldn't play avi's with ac3 audio. Consider yourself warned.

The best thing you can do is make a number of small sample clips with different standards to experiment and find the best one for you. Then, just use a DVD+/-RW disc to burn to and find the highest standard you can achieve. That saves burning coasters, too!
