    1 cent (Penny)
    5 cent (Nickle)
    10 cent (Dime)
    25 cent (Quarter, 1/4 of a dollar)
    50 cent
    1 dollar coin

In Canada we call our dollar coin a Loonie (because of the Loon on one side) and we also have a $2 coin which we call a Two-nie.

A female friend used to say that we should call the $2 coin a Moonie because it has the Queen on one side and her bear behind... I say that's fine but we'll have to come up with a new name for the Nickle (Queen on one side and a beaver on the other) - she stopped the Moonie comments...

So, if not a technical draftsman (god forbid!!!) what do you do?

And, yes, I would consider writing a program cheating - I was stunned at four similar solutions so quickly. I was wondering if your nickname was "Mr Data" - then I read the bit in brackets. I suppose writing the program requires some thought in to how to solve the puzzle though... I had to ponder over it on the train on the way home using the old grey matter...

Thanks. It's a gem of a picture isn't it? And I didn't doctor it up - I found it on the web as-is. I've tried other avatars but I keep going back to this one ...hahaha

This problem is an old one if you're from the states. It's simple, but you catch 3 out of 4 people with it. Sometimes the simple ones are the best ones, like this childhood classic:
    Q: Why was "6" afraid of "7"?
    A: Because "7 8 9"

    Or another classic:
Q: If you were in an international flight from europe to the US and your plane crashes on the US-Canada border, where would the survivors be buried?
A: They wouldn't bury the survivors

In Canada we call our dollar coin a Loonie (because of the Loon on one side) and we also have a $2 coin which we call a Two-nie.
We had the infamous Susan B. Anthony dollar coin that came out in the '70s. It failed miserably to gain acceptance. They made it too close in size to the quarter and people were confusing the two, even though the dollar coin had slight flats around the edge.

@daamon: Currently, I'm a Civil Engineer and work with many technical draftsmen. I think it would be dishonoring (for them) to be labelled Technical Draftsman...

Hint on the puzzle: Think about the wording of the puzzle - not the math...

    Ah - That explains it...!

Yes, I quickly worked out the math wasn't gonna happen, so resorted to the wording. Still got me stumped but I'm working on it...

Tough, because every time i stop concentrating i think "aha!" because over here it would be easy. we have:
    1p piece
    2p piece
    5p piece
    10p piece
    20p piece
    50p piece
    £1 coin
    £2 coin

so it would just be a 10p and a 20p. i guess your answer will be something wanky like "metal" :P

    The answer is:

Two coins, a nickle and a quarter... One of them is not a nickle (but the other one is).

Sorry... I can't believe I fell for it. I figured it was something clever, but not that obvious. Lesson learnt...

    @ Capmaster & SquirrelDip - Right, a new puzzle: "A Deadly Field"

There is a field that is a square, and is exactly 100m by 100m. It is surrounded by a brick wall that is 3m high. In the South West corner of the field is a 2m wooden gate, which is ajar. A man is approaching the centre of the field and knows that, as soon as he arrives, he will die.

    How does he know this?

That response made the waiting worth it, hee hee
Squirrel - I told you he'd be pissed

Hmmm ...I'll have to ponder that deadly field for a while. The answer is probably a play on words, and those are the most difficult.

    daamon,
I have to take sole blame for this one. Squirrel Dip merely PM'ed me with the answer and out of politeness (or cruelty) waited until you had a chance to waste whatever time you spent thinking about all the mathematical subtleties involved.

I will immediately retrieve my cat-o-nine-tails and partake in some self-flagellation to atone for such cruelty

    ( )

BTW, I have thought about the field and the only thing I can come up with is:

He's well-centered ....and outstanding in his field,
but the Lord saith "Centers will be cast down into the fire and brimstone"

I know, horrible answer. It clearly needs more thought.

I dont know if a trick qualifies as a puzzle, but this is an interesting
E-trick. Been around for a long time, but there may be a few who haven't seen it yet. Really very simple, but took me a while to figure it out. If you know how it's done, keep it a secret for a while.

Okay, I've given it some thought and can't come up with anything. My fear is, that if this is in responce to the 2 coins it's going to be even more of a groaner.

I'm ready for the pain - unless anyone else has any ideas...

Ha ha. No, you got me fair and square and SquirrelDip was an entertained (not so innocent) bystander...

But, if you feel the need to indulge in self-flagellation then I'm happy for you. I think...

I couldn't be arsed to type flaninacupboard (copied and pasted this time), so I just typed "Eddie" off the cuff in reference to the fact that your username was inspired by him. There was no intention to offend (and I apologise if you were offended) or, if your name is "Eddie", to spook you by appearing to know you.

yeah, you spooked me! people call me edd and a select few call me eddie. just confused me a sec, thinking you were one of those few people!

Last guess on the puzzle, you're mixing units. the field is 100 metres by 100 metres but the wall is 3 miles high, and the gate is two miles long. he'll either get whacked by the gate blowing in the wind or have a wall fall on him.

i'm probably taking your explanation too literally, but i can't spot anything else up with it. come on, what's the answer?
