i can't seem to edit mpeg-2 properly in premiere...playing the file on the timeline is very slow and jumpy. also, the video and audio will not sync when exported to svcd format using the bbmpeg. i would prefer not to capture using huffy format because of its output size...anyone recommend a good format and resolution to capture in so i can edit in premiere then export to svcd format? i was also wondering capturing in MPEG-1 480x480 2.6mbps the same quality as MPEG-2 480x480 2.6mbps? thanks for the info!

    vital,

Are you caping into AVI?? and then encoding to SVCD 480x480??
You say you are editing your mpeg-2 in premiere,... When you edit
your mpegs, are you using transitions or other effects? or are you
just cutting out commercials and/or merging clips together? My
beliefe in audio synch issues is that when you cut clips here and
there and piece together these clips, you will most likely have audio
synch issues, less your cuts are really accurate and short, not cutting
something like really long clips here and there, etc. Or, I could be
wrong. I'm sure other's out ther have done the above and have
NO audio issues, but never the less, if you are cutting and then
merging, try doing half hour clips instead. And, if possible, try
and do seporate clips and play them each to there entirety, seeing
if you get any audio issues. Istead of find answeres to audio
issues, try and find out what/when/where they are occuring, then,
you will be able to prevent them.

    Good night!

well for example, when i capture music videos to burn to SVCD, i capture at MPEG-2 480x480 2.60mbps. i edit the file in Premiere to cut the front and back with fade transitions during the beginning and end of the video. then i export the timeline, re-encoding it to SVCD 480x480. so i don't really do that much cutting/merging...only cutting a few hundred frames of the beginning and end...usually the output will come out about 2 seconds out of sync....anyone recommend a better way to do this?

  4. MPEG-2 utilizes I, B and P frames. Only the I frames are full frame images. The others are transitional images, detailing CHANGES to the last I frame. You should definitely be capturing in something OTHER than MPEG-2 if you plan on doing any editing on your clips.

  5. Vital-

How are you editing MPEG-2 files in Premiere. I have Premiere 6 and can't get an MPEG-2 file to even import, let alone EDIT one!

    What's the scoop?

    vital,

Sorry it took me this long to respond to your post. ***

You said that Premier re-encodes your SVCDs. Sounds
like theirs your problem. ...Maybe with long clips.
Even though you said "not that much cutting/merging"
one cut/merge is all it takes, but never-the-less, I've
ben using the womble for my cuts (and merge), but only
on short clips. I do 5 to 10 minutes, between commerials.
I've found/realized that wome (and Premier?), whe user
adds a transition, your clip has to go through a small
re-encoded (for the transition). Maybe you're just not
hitting that magic spot, while others are. I don't know.
But think about it,... you have basically two files, one for
video and the other for audio. Ok, again, think about it.
for example, say you have two 5 minute clips, and you
wanna merge them together, but you don't want that
glich that occurs when you merge (cause things are not
in synch, audio/video) and so you decide to add in a
transition in between these two clips. Ok, point is...
a vedio and audio are basically two files glued together
when perfect synchness. Now, you add the transition
(trans. with audio? or not?) and now the synch is off.
for a very short clip, you wont notice the lips synch issue,
but if you did this for 3, 5 or 10 or more clips, and some
are short, others are long, you're gonna notice some
synch issues. So, sit down and think about over again,...
the video and audio as two file glued together for one
    clip.
I'll say this, one way I have over come this, when I've
noticed that this is happening to me (very rerely), I have
    a pre-recorded 2 second video/audio clip that I use to
insert bettween my clips (works every time) and NEVER
any audio synch issues. Weather I do this in Womble or
in VirtualDub they both work. I have a 2 second blank
    AVI and MPEG clip.
I use the AVI clip when I cap to AVI (and if I need it)
I use the MPEG clip when I've already capped straight
to MPEG2 (PVR) . You don't really need a monther
(Premier) to do this. Just some enginuity (speeling) .
I do have Premier, but I NEVER use it. For me, it was
a complete waist of money. It's a monster I tell ya...
A monster. It eats everything in sight, not just your
    videos, ...your resources too.

*** Ever since this site went through a transitional period,
I've not ben ben able to synch with peoples posts.
probably due to the new limit on this main page, as that
is the place I go to view the NEWest posts. The bug
is, sometimes, so many people are posting questions,
and pepole are responding imediatlely, and so, every
other posts are getting pushed down. Hent, hent, Baldrick.
I've found many posts that I've gave my (FWIW) response
to and never seen again till days later, many other
    responses have ben made.
