I have some AVIs with weird resolutions. One is 512x384. Another is 448x336. I am converting them to DVD and I have a 4:3 TV. I set the Video Arrange Method at Center 640x420 (so the subtitles will not get cut off). Would it work? The AVIs do not seem to be widescreen, will I maintain that full screen if I set it at 640x420 or will it look distorted?

Use the program called FitCD to help you determine what size you should resize to.

The program has an allowance for overscan with 4 options ... option 0 being none and option 3 being the most.

The program creates an AviSynth script for you to use but you can also just write down the resize values and plug them into TMPGEnc using the CUSTOM SIZE option for the VIDEO ARRANGE METHOD.

if you are making a dvd you can use tmpegenc. this creates good mpeg files from any resolution to a default resolution.

    The acceptable resolutions for PAL DVD are 352 X 288(MPEG-1, MPEG-2), 352X576(MPEG-2) & 720X576(MPEG-2). The acceptable resolutions for NTSC DVD are 352 X 240(MPEG-1, MPEG-2), 352X480(MPEG-2) & 720X480(MPEG-2), from What is DVD (top left).

Because of this, you won't be able to use your resolutions on DVD unless you re-encode them to standard specs. I'd be very surprised if your DVD player played them as is. What you can do is that you can get black borders around the video to retain the orginal aspect ratio without distortion to "pad" the video to one of the standard resolutions.

Everything I have said so far sounds harder than it actually is if you are using TMPGEnc.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Yes, that's what I meant: setting the Video Arrange Method at Center Custom Size so it leaves a black area all around. I did not mean the resolution of the MPEG because that would not be able to play on my DVD player if I changed it. I'll try the FitCD technique. Thanks.

Sorry. It was pretty unclear from your first post.
    If in doubt, Google it.
