My mates laptop had a virus from a floppy not so long ago and it had to be wiped clean. He has tried to reinstall his Digital camera and softwear and as soon as the PC restarts an error comes up:

Windows cannot upgrade file %1 to %2
    %2: %1

It just repeats this for ever.... I tried to go in on safe mode and it just loads fro ever and ever... Serious proble?? Please someone help!!!

When you say 'wiped clean', do you mean reformat or just reinstall the OS? Most laptops like mine have a bunch of discs to reinstall the OS, but don't always reformat, which sometimes is needed after a virus attack. Also did you go to the laptop manufacturer to get the latest drivers, etc., for the laptop? I am assuming you got the OS installed? This just happened when the camera driver was installed?
EDIT: The make and model of the laptop and the OS installed may be helpful also if someone has had a similar problem.

Going to need some more information.

One thing you might try is to copy the installation to the HD with explorer>copy&paste. And trying to install from there, or rebooting into safe mode and installing it while in safe mode.

I don't know your friend's system since you didn't give any specs, but if it is a digital camera, connected by way of USB, then all he really needs to do is plug it into the PC and then double click "My Computer" and the camera should show up as a "removeable drive". He can double click that removable drive and just drag and drop the pictures on to the HD and then edit them with Photoshop or whatever....if he's running XP.

It sounds like you need to reformat and reinstall the OS. If he has the reinstall system discs that came with the laptop as mine does, see if there is a reformat option. A lot of reinstall discs as default just put a new copy of the OS over the old, and virus damage may still remain. Go the the laptop manufacturer for more info.

I agree with Redwudz, sounds like you need another reformat...something has gone astray.

You should still be able to drag and drop the pictures from the camera to the HD. WindowsME will recognize a new drive being plugged in. You'll get the little "adding hardware" icon in your system tray (by the clock), then the drive should show up in "My Computer"....that's how I get pictures off of my HP digital camera...works just like a pen drive...just a suggestion.

Cheers for all your help, I eventually got it to boot up left the error screen alone for about an hour. It said windows may not run properly. Did an norton anti virus check and it found like 59 errors, have left it running overnight doing an emergency virus repair...been going for about 9 hours now still going.....

Sounds like you are making progress. You probably should run Spybot (With the updates) or the like to clean up stuff that Norton won't find.

Okay guys, Laptop is up and running Norton did it's stuff, seems to be okay except ...... I am now back to the original problem , the digital camera!

The softwear and drivers load all fine but as soon as you try to get pictures, "Camera not found".

I know the camera works and USB cable is good as i am using on my PC now, but i can't understand why it won't go on the laptop!

    Any ideas ???

I don't really understand having to work through the frustration of the program, when you can just drag and drop them...must be a pretty awesome program.

It wont find the camera in "My Computer" either. Soon as you go to open it. "Error, Camera not found". And yet the adobe photo program knows it there, but again, soon as you go to open it. "Error, Camera not found".

    ?

Make sure the camera is set to transfer the pictures to the PC.

What kind of camera is it.
