  1. Hi Folks,

Sorry for the basic question... I tried to do a search, but the limitation on having a keyword longer than 3 characters impeded that process...

Hopefully there is a simple solution - I have received some short video clips that were all done (from what I assume) on a Mac and are in .dv format (meaning - .dv extension).

I need these files in a format that I can use WINDOWS tools on... I need to resize the video and then ultimately would like to stream it via Windows Media or Flash.

My problem is converting it from this .dv to a format that I can use Windows compatible tools to do the resize. Once I have it in a Windows format (.avi, .wmv, etc) I can do the rest as far as encoding and streaming..

I *think* I may need to purchase Qucktime Pro... but before I throw out my $30, I'd like to know if it can do the resize and convert to a windows type format..

    Anyone know? Thanks!!

If it really is a 'DV' format, it is a avi and can be opened in Virtualdub if you install the Panasonic DV codec (In the 'tools' section to the left.) Never seen it called .dv format, but whatever. You might put it into Gspot or AVIcodec to see what it says the format is.
EDIT: Sorry, didn't know MAC had a different DV format.

.dv files are Mac and I haven't really found a way to do this yet myself. So if anyone knows the proper way to "export" DV files from a Mac so that you can open them on a Windoze machine, that would be great.

depends... do you want it to stay DV? if so there is nothing that I am aware can be done. Otherwise, it can be "exported" to any compatible file format for pc .mpeg1, mpeg2, mpeg4, .avi etc.

In my case, yes I wanted it to remain DV.

Has anyone tried Rad Video Tools , I know it can convert Quicktime stuff, and the file input shows .dv as an input option. I don't have any Mac .dv files so can't test it.

  7. CCE takes .DV files, i never tried it but that could be a solution if an MPG stream output is ok. The original poster want Windows Media or Flash, so maybe not...

I'll have too check that out too. The big problem is that windows doesn't know how to read the file. Probably just the big-endian/little endian thing.
There might be another way to get the files out of the Mac that might work, but from what little I have tried has been and export from an Avid, and we all know how well that software utilizes the installed codecs
