I convert avi to dvd (.vob files) all the time using tmpgenc and Maestro, but it takes quite a bit of time to encode and fiddle with Maestro. For stuff that I want high quality this is fine , but I got a bunch of .avi tv clips a bud gave me and I would just like to throw them to a dvd as quick as possible. My expectations on quality are low, just as long as they are not horrid...
Any suggestions on programs to use would be much appreciated. Someone told me that tmpgenc has a quick avi to dvd program (what's the name), has anyone had much success with this? Is this worth going out and getting for what I would like (fast avi to dvd conversion)
Thanks,
rhuala

ya I hear you guys but is there no better way. I haven't looked into this in about a year and a half but I thought by now someone would have put out something decent. It's not just the time it's all the fricken steps and waiting in between.
1. Load tmpgenc
2. Load avi file into tmpg
3. Set all the settings (got templates so not so bad now)
4. wait wait wait... ok so 5hrs now 40min will low settings
6. load MPG tools
7. split mpeg into m2v and m2p
8. wait wait wait...
9. Boot up Maestro
10. Take time fiddling with all the settings
11. Load in all m2v and mp2's...
12. wait wait wait... as they encode or whatever
13. move all m2v and mp2 to movie area (for 10avi's this is a pain)
14. Compile
15 wait wait wait...
16 Boot up Nero
17. Burn
18 wait wait wait................................
Has no one made a program yet that can go from avi to .vob in a few steps. Seems like huge leaps forward with dvd shrink and dvd2one, from the old ways of backing up dvd's. Was hoping something faster for avi to .vob ...sigh
Come on someone make this and I'll buy it!!! .avi to .vob in 5 steps or less, encoding at speeds near dvd2one...

Edit
Removed my help as original poster is obviously a smart arse who knows everything. -
"You don't give your system specs and you say a bunch of avi's we have no way of knowing how long these are???? "
What does it matter how long the files are or what my system specs are???? All I am interested in is a faster way then described above, if you know anything about converting .avi's to .vob's this should be a straight forward quesiton?????????? ... so if you have a faster system your going to skips some of the steps I mentioned above???????
I have 80 .avi files ranging from 7mb to 4gb...
I have a fast computer, >3 ghz... it has a fast video card too... and a fast hd
...but thanks anyways I'll give TMPGenc DVD Author a shot...

ps. I batch encode all the time, that's still really only crunching one step in the 18 I described above. I'm looking for faster... -

speed of pc affects encoding time as limiting component is always* the processor
length of avi (time) obviously affects the encoding time
the original method is not that bad
1 tmpeg to encode
2 split mpeg int m2v and mp2
3 use maestro
4 burn with nero
converting a dvd to avi using virtual dub has far more steps
tmpeg dvd author should be a bit quicker as you wont have to be splitting the mpeg2 up
although
"assumption is the mother, brother, any other f###er of all cockups"
converting a 700mb 90 minute avi or a 120 minute 1400mb avi of high quality to dvd for play in a standalone should have minimal quality loss from the original avi -
There's not much you can do - no modern day wizardry can cure the fact that an AVI has to be reencoded before it can be authored as a Video DVD. This encoding takes time, how much depends on your processor. Then it has to be authored as Video DVD which also takes some time. Now, there are quite a few DVD players around that plays AVI files written to a CD/DVD - this sounds like the advancement in technology you're looking for.

Thanks for stating the extremely obvious...
"Can neoDVD. Quick and decent quality."
Looks like a capture tool, then to DVD similar to POwerDVD maybe... pchan, can it take a .avi input? or will it just capture then got to mpeg2 ->.vob
Man with all the thousands of *.avi downloads these days (TV shows + Movies) from the likes of emule, edonkey. kazaa and torrents (not saying I do it or approve of it), combined with the huge price drops in dvd burners and media you would think there would be a huge demand for this and yet no product...
Any good programmers out there should be sniffing a business opportunity here...

I have 2 PCs and I use 1 PC with TV out to play the avi. The 2nd PC captures it @352x480 (or 576), basically DVD compliant. Voila. No need to wait 10 hours for a 90 minute show.

Hi rhuala2,
Yes, newDVD does take in avi format. It's faster than CCE when I was using my AMD Xp2100+. But the neoDVD video quality is lower than CCE. Usign default setting neoDVD tends to give bigger filesize. Other than that, neoDVD is OK.
I have since upgraded my PC to P4 3.0C with 512Mbyte DDR400 ram. It used to take me about 3X (1 hrs of avi video takes 3hrs to convert to PAL VCD) to convert to PAL VCD using TMPGEnc using the Xp2100+. With the P4, it is only 0.9x to convert to PAL VCD using TMPGEnc with high quality. 1.8X for PAL DVD.
So, if you want speed, invest on a latest and fastest P4. The latest P4 is at 3.4Ghz. -
Are you kidding pchan? Do you think 0.9x is FAST for VCD conversions?? LoL, a duron 1400 would do it faster with MC or CCE.
-
I have one xp2100+ and a 2500+, thats cheap and fast IF you use the good programs. Why didnt you recommend to buy MC for $150 instead of a Pentium4 at $alot including MB and DDr400 and so on. My bro got a duron 1400, i will test it one day with VCD. My xp2100+ can make 2 vcds in the time your $$$ P4 can make one, the xp2500 quite a bit faster, more specific 9min30sec to encode 44 minutes audio+Video from AVI to VCD using AVS/MainConcept.
EDIT: Sorry, was too fast, it should be 13 minutes, was a shorter clip at 9m30s.
