  1. I'm becoming a DV enthusiast and looking to convert analog tapes to DV format and stream from my website to my family. Also, I'm looking to copy back to VHS from DV for fam and friends.

I can't decide b/w the 100 and 300. Wondering if there are folks that have used both.

    TIA

I use the 100 only, but try a forum search for 'ADVC-300'. I found 88 threads. There's been quite a bit of discussion about it and the 100.

The ADVC-300 sounds like it does produce even better quality than the ADVC-100 because of the built-in enhancements that the ADVC-300 has over the ADVC-100 such as the 3D comb filter and DNR etc.

    However ...

    Last I heard ...

There is no way to defeat MACROVISION copy protection with the ADVC-300 but MACROVISION can be easily disabled with the ADVC-100

So that is something to consider.

Yes that is a nice feature but it still can't defeat copy protection.

  6. has anyone actually looked at the prices of these things? You can buy a dvd recorder or camcorder instead and use that.

That's nice but with a Canopus ADVC-100 or ADVC-300 and some knowledge of what it is you are doing you can achieve results that are much better than anything you can do with a stand alone DVD recorder.

This is especially important when it comes to videotapes which usually need a lot of work if you want to maximize the quality.

So that is one major benefit of using something like the Canopus device i.e., increased quality.

There are of course other reasons you might want to use the Canopus ... digitalized footage is DV AVI format which is very easy to edit so if the footage is from an old camcorder (non-digital model) that makes a lot of sense ... rather than just going straight to MPEG-2 on a stand alone DVD recorder.

I could go on but you get the point I hope.

Problem with DVD recorders is they do not clean the video. If he is converting VHS (his own stuff), then most likely it is going to have alot of noise in it. If he is copying a tape and wants to output to PC and VHS then the ADVC is the way to go. I read somewhere you can output to both S-Video as well as DVIO at the same time. I don't know if that was what he was thinking. Here ya go. ADVC-100 - $250, TBC-1000 - $250, or ADVC-300 $550 - no macrovision removal.

    Neither....
I haven't used the 300, but IMHO they're waaaaaaay overpriced.
If you have money to burn go Canopus.
But there are more flexible, cheaper alternatives, that
will give you more for your hard earned dough.

    Actually, it seems that everything from Canopus is great;

Don't make me eat you alive

I've been lazy actually ... I should have picked a completely new one by now ... I'm gonna try and change it every-so-often.

Just to **** you up :P

Next up I'm thinking something from a Nunsploitation film ... but finding something that fits that bill AND won't get censored or bitched at is a bit tricky hehehe
