What is the best NetFlix-type rental program. I would have just signed up for NetFlix but everyone I know seems to be cancelling their subscription and people are bitching about NetFlix on the forums here too. I heard WalMart has a new plan? I live in New York City so anyone have good experiences here?

BTW, I searched the forums before posting this seemingly common topic but did not find what I was looking for. :P

i, for one, have had no problems with netflix. As for others, I don't know what to say since I have never tried any other programs. My turnaround is great, and I still feel it is worth 21 dollars plus tax.

  4. I tried several online rental outlets -

Netflix has the better service as far as speedy delivery goes.
The people complaining about Netflix are complaining about the rise in price and somewhat delays for delivery.

Netflix is very good for selection and availability of new releases, Indie films, foreign and documentaries.

You'll find better selections for B-movies, cult movies and older films at Wal-mart

Walmart isn't as fast as Netflix...and new releases usually have a longer waiting period for availability.
Harder to find titles also tend to keep you waiting your turn...which can take up to months.

www.gameznflix.com - has a very big selection...much better music selection than Netflix plus they rent games.
Their site layout and search SUCKS!
They are extremely slow too - forget about joining for free...you'll get your first free selection by the time your free trail expires.

www.dvdavenue.com - has movies, games and hardcore porn.
They also have one of the worst selections.
Expect to wait a long time for most titles...and they put stickers on their DVDs.
They at least use padded envelopes and put 2 DVDs in one envelope.

    www.cafedvd.com - so-so service and good selection

    www.filmcaddy.com - so-so service and decent selection

    www.qwikfliks.com - so-so servive and decent selection

www.hollywebdvd.com - somewhat of good selection

www.flicksmart.com - porn movies only...pricey and only 2 out at a time for basic

www.adult-dvd-rental.biz - other porn rental reviews and links

www.vlibrary.com - best selection of VHS videos...and they offer some DVD rentals (not a lot)
    A bit pricey though

www.facets.org - VHS and DVD rental or purchase...many rare and hard to find titles but also very pricey

Thanks for everybody's suggestions and especially Rookie for his detailed list. I just finished signing up for Walmart's free trial and I am hoping for the best.

Which plan is best depends somewhat on where you live in relation to the distribution center. And what kind of movies you like. If you prefer old or foreign films, then Netflix is better than Walmart. I have both at the same time and I have found about 30 films I would like to see that Walmart does not carry and only two that Walmart carries and Netflix doesn't. But cost and speed is another matter. Walmart is $15.54 for 2 at a time and Netflix is going up to $21.95 for 3 at a time. Walmart uses postal tracking, so they can send a movie before they actually receive the return. I sent 2 DVDs back on Wed and the replacements were shipped on Thurs. Whereas I returned 2 films to Netflix on Wed., they were received there Fri, but my replacements will not ship until Mon. So I figure I can get 14 movies a month (returning them immediatly) for $15.54 from Walmart or 12 for $21.95 from Netflix. Once I watch the 30 movies that Netflix has over Walmart, I will drop them and stick with Walmart . The weird thing is that I live closer to Netflix and it is in my own state.

I have been using netflix for going on three years now and have never had a problem. They have extremely fast turnaround and I have found very few movies they do not have. As for 12 movies a month from netflix I do not know why you are getting such a low number. I recently averaged my netflix rentals on a monthly basis and I average 23 movies per month with the three plan. I had the 5 plan for a while but it is just too many damned movies at once haha.
The real answer lies in completely understanding the question!

Between me and a friend I can breakd own a few.

Netflix.com: never had a problem with them, their distro center is just ouf of town, quick turn around, never a bad thing to report. However they did slightly raise their prices recently.

Greencine.com: Turn around time is LOOOONG because they only have one distro center, however they have alot of stuff others do not including anime and some harder to find movies. They seem a good bunch, time of turn around is the only bad thing about them. The DO offer a free trial, or at least did when I signed up. Of course the rarer and harder to find something is, the longer you'll end up waiting for it.

Walmart: sucky selection on some stuff, horrible turn around, long waits.

This is why I said it depends on where you live. But I don't know why Netflix is slower even though they are closer. I seems to have something to do with this distribution center. They received the DVD on Friday, originally said it would ship the same day and then changed to Monday. DVDs returned to Walmart the same day were shipped back on Thurs. Since there is really no way to determine how quick the turn around will be for a particular center, I suggest you try both at the same time. One advantage to Walmart is their trial is a month long, but they do have a less diverse selection.

overall the few people complaining about Netflix typically post something like: "I used to cycle 25 films a month for $20 (6 a week on the "3 out plan") and now I am only getting 18 films, shipping included, for $22.

Those minority whining are the 1% of customers that netflix is better off without. when they right their indignant letters or cancel the netflix guys probably look at those customers' rentals for themonth and say "good ridance."

I have used more than a half dozen rent by mail service...NONE has the selection and turnaround of netflix. Walmart runs a close second on turnaround, but their selection is not as broad.

Blockbuster announced last year they would take their test marketed unlimited rentals nationwide, but they pulled back. With every pc with a burner sold, and with blank dvd's under a $1, and with knowledge of decryption increasing, netflix and the other unlimited montly rental outfits is going to need to increase the "throttling" of high volume renters or revise their price plan.

I say good riddance to any company that "throttles" their high volume renters. This is more of a matter of principle since I don't expect to sign up for 6 a month anyway.

So far my Walmart free month is going ok. Signed up last Tuesday night. Got my first two DVDs Friday. Sent them back Saturday morning. They say they received it yesterday (Monday) and I am hoping to get my next two DVDs tomorrow.

Just an update. I have, now, had both Walmart and Netflix for a month plus and received 12 flics from walmart and 14 from Netflix. Thye both seem to slow way down after the first 2 weeks. But I suspect I will stick with Walmart after I have viewed the films the Netflix has exclusive (mostly foriegn) since it cost less. Netflix has superior search engine and descriptions. I also prefer the recommendations provided by Netflix. About the only thing I prefer about the Walmart website is that a new screen is launched when you select a film to rent so that you do not lose your place (minor advantage). If things change in the next month, I will update.

I am not saying I think the are throttling. I walk by a main post office everyday and If I drop my netflix in in the morning Monday, Netflix is mailing me out another title tuesday morning which I get Wednesday. I get my next cycle on Friday. I get 25 to 26 titles a month this way on a $20 plan.

I am just saying I wouldn't be surprised or deeply offended if they did insitute a new model or formula to detect and react to this. for sure they are loosing money on me.

Netflix is great. We just joined and we're impressed as hell with how fast the turnaround is.

Netflix and Walmart have the most of those type of documentaries, but probably not as many as may be hoping for.

    Netflix has the bigger selection

GreenCine has some the other two don't but is only a good alternative source.
