ok folks i'm a little new at this so bear with me. i'm trying to capture video from a sony trv460 which i just purchased and at the moment can only do so through a usb cable that came with it. now i'm wondering is the only possibly way to do this is by streaming over usb because i'm getting frame loss when doing this. if anybody can give me any tips on doing this it would be appreciated

gonna have to breakdown and get dv firewire cable. I did. Still learning how to use the same camera you got.

Only a FIREWAIRE connection (also known as IEEE 1394 as well as i.link) will give you a lossless quality transfer from the camcorder to the computer.
USB cannot do this.
In short you do not want to use USB ... you want to use FIREWIRE.
FIREWIRE cables are fairly cheap.
If your computer does not have a FIREWIRE port (unlikely but possible) then you can add FIREWIRE by purchasing a PCI add-on board. Such boards are also fairly cheap.

ok i can live with that...i'm just wondering for this camera do i need to get the sony cable...or will any cable be able to hook into it...because the sony cables are 50 and 120. let's just hope...i was thinking about picking up an audigy II and using that but i may just get a cheap firewire pci card

I recently bought a Firewire/USB 2.0 PCI card from Dabs so that I could transfer DV from my Camcorder to PC. It was only £18 and it came with a firewire cable and some editing software thrown in. It's un-branded but works a treat. Using WinDV, i've captured quite a bit of footage and havent dropped a frame yet! and that's while browsing and downloading.
