    I recently recorded some old VHS video footage to tape on my DV camcorder and then captured it to my computer using WinDV. I converted the avi from type 1 to type 2 using DV converter. I would now like to edit this captured avi. I can play it using RealPlayer on my PC so I must have the correct codecs installed.

    I tried to edit this avi with Pinnacle studio 7 but it will not load it. I have tried to split the file into smaller pieces using VirtualDub but I get an error saying " Couldn't locate decompressor for format dvsd (unknown)
    VirtualDub requires a video for Windows (VFW) compatable codec to decompress video" This message implied that I needed a different codec so I installed YMPEG (a VFW codec) from this site but it made no difference.

    When I use GSpots render function to check this files requirements I get the following:

    Video path - (S) --> AVI Splitter --> DV Video Decoder --> (R)
    Audio path - (S) --> AVI Splitter --> Morgan Stream Switcher --> (R)

    In the video section for codec I have "n.a." and for audio codec i have "No audio channels"

    I have captured video footage from my camera previously and edited it with no problems. The only difference this time is that the original footage came fron VHS and was recorded on tape on My camcorder.

    Does any one know what I could be doing wrong?

    Thanks
    What's that burning smell?

  2. Lack of audio in your video suggests that you must either switch to a newer application to capture video which caps videos with more modern capture drivers...or...you must extract the audio as a WAV file and re-encode it. I have this problem all the time. When I do edits or processing with VDubMod, very often the audio disappears due to this VFW-vs.WDM problem. I separately extract the audio using TMPGenc by going into BROWSE, then open the AVI file, then choose ALT-F for FILES -> SAVE AS -> WAV. Then I must fly in the WAV file separately during editing. If you can't save the audio portion of an AVI file using TMPGenc it means you don't have the right DirectShow audio filter installed. You can find lots of DirectShow audio filters at www.doom9.org
    The real solution is to use a more modern WDM capture driver to capture your video.
    Try the following:
    Download the freeware AVI_IO. It captures direct from your DV camcorder and I believe it uses WDM drivers. This may solve your problem.
    If that doesn't work, consider coughing up $30 for Scenalyzer. It's arguably the best capture software on the planet, costs very little, works great, and I'm virtually certain it uses native WDM capture drivers, so Pinnacle ought to be able to edit AVIs you capture with Scenalyzer. I believe you can try before you buy with Scenalyzer to see if it works for you.
    For capping Type 1 DV AVI files Ulead Media Studio Pro has also worked well for me, ditto Ulead Video Studio Pro. Both are available at nominal cost and I know for a fact they use WDM drivers so Pinnacle can edit AVIs they capture. Other options, like Adobe Premiere, grow progressively more expensively and are probably overkill.
    Try AVI_IO for a start. It's free and just might solve your problems.
