I need some blueprints/plans on how to make my own macrovision removal box. I'm getting a directv reciever and I read in the manuel that it has a function on some shows and movies where it won't let you tape to vhs if it detects that the output is hooked to the vcr before going to the tv. Anyone else with a directv reciever have this problem? I think it's only on the newer generation models. thanks

That may be correct. Some VCR's just show a 'blue screen' when they don't get a standard signal. I PM'd you some info on that.

The Holdan VidMax SCART signal conditioner, simply stabilizes the video signal to provide a clean sharp signal eliminating colour bleed, picture flashing and other problems often seen from rented or purchased movies.
With no complicated wiring the VidMax has been purposely designed to make DVD duplication as easy as possible: You simply plug the VideoMax into the Scart Socket on your recorder and connect via the scart socket to your VHS video or DVD player (source) and press play and record; it really is that simple.
Features:
Removes video instability (macrovision)
Eliminates plicture flashing
Eliminates colour bleed
Simple easy to use design
No complicated wiring required
Includes power supply (UK Plug)
Works with Video, DVD, Playstation 2, XBox and more
NOTE: Although this product removes all forms of copy protection it should not be used to make copies of material on DVD, DIVX, VHS, etc. that is copyright protected. Unauthorised duplication of material of this type is illegal without consent of the owner. -
You can also just put a TBC between the DirecTV receiver and your VCR. That strips macrovision and every other type of copy protection, as well as cleaning up the output from old tapes.

Aside from the resistor change, does this thing really work?

It should work on older types of MV. I have found a case where it might
be flaky.
The extra bright luma level continues right up to the next horizontal
sync ( unlike the pictures on that site) requiring that the pulse generator be extremely precise. Either it leaves some MV in or it eats the Hsync
if its off a little.
I have a design that fixes that. -
Got a link for that better design?
Also on the above link, there is another error. At the bottom of the schematic, there are 2 votage regulators. One is +12 volt, the other +5. The part number on the +12 is not corrert, it should be a 7812 (LM7812), otherwise you would get 2 +5 volt supplies, which won't work.Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... if DirectTV is blocking certain shows and movies from being taped. Does'nt that go against Fair Use. I have not heard or read where cable or Sat companies have blocked programs from being taped. If they are blocking. then there is something out there to bypass. Before you invest in a box or start to build, ask someone in you area who has DirectTV if they can tape. Co-worker here has Direct and he has no problem with taping a show for personal
use

I ain't got no website anymore , so I'll have to
mail you a PDF .
PM with your email .
Note: this thing is microprocessor controlled.
I'll have to find the code for it if you really want to do it.
I also have a PCB layout -
What kind of micro? I think I still have a Pony Programmer somewhere, so any I2C device should be easy. If it is something else, I'll have to find a programmer, but that shouldn't be too hard. Most of the micro makers have some sort of interface schematics on their websites.
I might even have a JTAG interface kicking around somewhere too. I'll send you a PM now, thanks.Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... Never had a trouble with recording from DSS. Sounds like rumor.

Well i downloaded the manuel and it says something about copy-protected shows and if you route it thru the vcr it might nor record properly. This is with a 6th generation model, I know my 1st gen doesn't have a problem with it. The model I'm getting is the Hughes HBH-Sa if you look at the pdf manuel on whatever website cause dtv reciever manuels are all over the place it talks about it.
