Just installed a fan (0.9 W) in my LiteOn 5001. 12v wire soldered to the right side of L11 and negative to the ground pad on mother board without using a resistor. Worked very well. When I turn the power off the fan is off.

  2. Tried L11 mod - it worked for me too. Little guy on the back left corner of m/b (looking from front of unit). Now my fan only runs during power on.

    Thanks!

  3. I just bought a LiteOn LVW-5001 today. I went to the firmware site at www.liteonit.com.tw/dc/english/download/index.asp. I downloaded the system and drive updates, applied them, then downloaded the next one and applied it. Here's the numbers (with incremental changes in bold):

    Initially
    010143-1129-E2S5(100-0109)

    After applying system firmware LNEA1176.DSU
    0101-0143-1176-E2S5(100-0109)

    After applying drive firmware LNEA1000.D00
    0101-0143-1176-F2SC(100-0109)

    After applying system firmware LNEA1180.DS1
    0101-0143-1180-F2SC(101-0109)

First, has anyone modified the 1180 firmware to disable macrovision? I've read lordsmurf's info at www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/liteon.htm but it assumes the latest is 1163.

Second, some posts have mentioned LiteOn putting a fan on the 5001 if you send it to them. How can I contact LiteOn to do this? Thanks for any help.

    You can go to:

    http://www.ss3f.com/ilo/

Download the ILO / LiteOn SMART Firmware Hacker and patch the 1180.

I do not have a 5001 on hand to try it myself. So do it at your own risk.

Good to see you again smartblue ... thought we'd lost you.

    Mostly PAL:

    Mostly NTSC:

ILO is a LiteOn variant, so keep that in mind.

I'm still trying to get "downgrade-friendly" 1176/1180 hacks. There may be problems in latter fw's after 1163 and those greasy bastards at LiteOn added info that prevents downgrading. I think they freaked out when they saw their forum was being used to discuss hacking of their own machines.

  8. lordsmurf, why is that a problem? I mean, if you hack 1176 and call it 1177, you can still apply 1180. And if you hack 1180 and call it 1181, you can still apply a later one. Right? Isn't the worst case scenario that you can "downgrade" by simply changing the number in an older firmware to a higher number? I'm probably missing something, but I'm curious what other problems it might cause.
