  1. I have a friend's laptop that needs sorting out. I know what the problem is - the backlight on the display doesn't seem to work. In direct sunlight, I can see it is displaying what is showing up on my external monitor.

The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite S3000-X11.

Does anyone know how to get this sorted? I have tried the keyboard brightness control, but with no luck.

Thanks very much for any help!

  2. Also try to see if you can hook up an external monitor to it and make sure the video settings are correct

Or.... Go on ebay find another one and replace the screen. Either the LCD(TFT) or the LCD card is bad and you can only replace those.

  3. I have hooked it up to my LCD already and it is working fine. It's just the backlight. I'm going to go into BIOS and see what's up.

Thanks for the suggestion, I've got a nasty feeling she'll have to bear that in mind.

  4. I solved it by accident. There was nothing wrong with the hardware, software or BIOS. When I couldn't fix it, I thought it would be nice if I gave her back at least a nice, sparkly-clean laptop. While I was scrubbing the back (ink stains on it), the display flickered into life!

It must have been a loose connection, under a crack in the shell where it's taken a knock.

So, if she wants to get it to work, all she needs to do is massage the crack for a while! What a solution...
