Anyone care to own up? Yeah I've downloaded questionable items before. A thing of the past since I've been back on 56k. This is merely an admission on my part, not advocacy of warez.

Been here before, didn't really end well
I voted by the way, and guess this poll should be stacked 8-1 in favour of yes (note I said 'should'.)

  3. I used to be big into that a few years back. I had some major contacts and was a huge poster to a.b.w.i and to a.b.w.i.nt. Under a different nym of course I did a search once on one of my nyms and it came up like 1000 times in the admin abuse group that tracks prolific posters

Then P2P along came and it lost all the fun...
BTW, I think I must have about 30 backup tapes full of out dated programs that I've never used

Now, I just get the stuff mailed to me for testing and stuff from the companies...but never release.

I very rarely download warez as I don't have the time for them.

Not many due to the fact I am on dialup as this can be very slow to download on something.

Downloading warez isn’t rewarding either, due to poor quality compared with the legal stuff.

I normally occasionally only download free stuff such as some video clips and some Mp3 music files which are legal to get.

I used to able to get some legal stuff from MP3.com, however not much due to time. They are gone, no longer online.

In fact, the other week a downloaded a high quality 74-second video clip and this has taken my computer 2½ hours to complete while I was watching a DVD.

The 31.2 MB video is on UTC fuel cells and how this works: http://www.utcfuelcells.com/video/fc_video_1.avi

Can you see why, as it takes too long to get it?

I am more in photo collecting than anything else to keep in the PC.

I occasionally make a copy of information or the news on file in the PC.

Exactly my sentiments, back in the day when you used to be the only one in your social group that did that sort of thing it held some excitement but now when your boss at work wants to tell you about this great new program called Kazaa he downloaded then it just lacks the same level of awe it once did.

I used to be heavily involved in the piracy scene in 2000/01 including selling copies on eBay but I just lost interest in the hobby after it became like downloading mp3's.

So, as so very little I would normally say no. I don't remember when, the last time. Not lately though.

    3 hours? i think not.....

I often evaluate software before i buy it, i don't do MP3's as a rule (the exception if it's something i can't get hold of) and i don't do moviez either, i have a DVD rental service for that :P I do however D/L episodes of TV series i can't get over here or haven't been aired yet (like stargate or malcolm in the middle)

Sure is does takes a long time for me, 2 hours and thirty minutes as my download speed is 50.6 kbps. I just checked the estimated time.

You must on Broadband Internet access to get it in only 7 minutes.

This is why I can’t download too much stuff and what is the point? Too much time?

The music is on Internet radio and I can listen to it and I have a DVD and music CD collection to play. Most of my music is in the computer as Mp3 songs and I listen to it.

So, what is the point of downloading warez in such poor sound and visual?

I've downloaded some ....a while back. A buddy had serial cracks for some apps I had the demos of. Not lately though. I wouldn't feel right doing it now.

  15. Yeah, why not..... Once again the Robin Hood theory against the corporate world !!!!

BTW (Not promoting warez, cracks, or serialz) but it's always a trip to visit some of those sites. I think the groups that create keygens and other stuff, for "more difficult" programs, really do not get alot credit for their work. There should be a site for dedicated to them..... Similar to the Grammy's

  16. i'm still pretty deep in to warez.. but i never screwed around with the p2p business.. i'm alot better with warez than i used to be.. i was one of those "collectors" quite a while back, i'd download anything and everything. now i just get the stuff i want, need, or want to check out.. thats just programs.. but dvdr's are still a constant.. i'll pretty much download any dvdr.. cos shit, they're the standard format that will play on just about everything.. i could never download s/vcd's for archival purposes.. i do mp3's to a lesser extent.. theater release movies & ps2 games, i just get what i want to see/play.. it used to be that i would watch every new movie available...

its still nice to be able to get whatever whenever you want without having to pay for it. i know its wrong, but i still do it..

although, i have taken the stance that i wont sell any of my stuff.. if i do give a friend a program, or a s/vcd.. i'll install the program on their computer or i'll burn the s/vcd so that its too difficult for themcopy.

I do have some warez on my PC at home, can't have any at work of course. However the warez I have is either something I'm only going to use once, not ever going to be making profit from, or is obscure/difficult to find. I will never use a pirated program for profit. I downloaded TMPGEnc back in the day of 2.0 and registered it right away as I saw it was going to become a most useful program for my video biz. I have licensed versions of almost every Adobe program under the sun between home and work.

In fact most of the warez I get are games which I either play for a few minutes and realize it sucks or end up going out to purchase the game. In fact 90% of the time I've taken the time to find a game on a P2P or whatever I end up liking it enough that I go out and buy it. I did this for BF1942, Ghost Recon, Call of Duty, etc. and those ended up being some of my favorite games. Multiplayer on the net has been a gift to the gaming industry. It's getting a lot harder to use a pirated game to play online, if not impossible. I don't like that most require the game CD in the drive though

I don't download many movies or music anymore. I did that back in college with Napster but don't bother anymore. Partly due to the dialup at home and partly because I'm not one of those people who has to have music playing at all times of the day no matter what I'm doing. I value movies enough that I have quite a large DVD collection, and rent most films before deciding wheter to buy them or not. I do search for some rare music and film occasionally but it's often difficult to find even on P2P. For example: does anyone have a copy of the "Starfleet Project" with Brian May and Eddie Van Halen? I've always wanted that album but rarely run into a legitimate copy on eBay or other stores.

  21. When I was hitting Napster (on a T1 line, of course) I was looking for stuff that would either 1) never be released on CD, or 2) was out of print or obscure enough that my chances on eBay were slim.

Most of the albums I downloaded I have since found the CD or LP for and reauthored. Too many people don't take ripping serious enough to make a quality dub, they just threw the shit on the Internet.

Most of my stuff I now get on half.com or from DirecTV's music channels.

I'm right there with you - I never would have heard Modulo 1000, Fred Ware, Brute Force or a lot of experimental stuff (hmmm, limited edition of 10, anyone?) if it weren't for p2p. I miss Audiogalaxy.. they had a great system.

I really like the suggestion that Lawrence Lessig made in "Free Culture" that copyright should extend for 50 years, and then be renewable for $1, but if it wasn't worth $1 to the person who owned the rights, it would go into the public domain.

sorry... got a little off track...
