I've recently searched for newer models of DVD recorder drives on the site, and it seems that the ones which are capable of writing all formats (including DVD-RAM) are not capable of bitsetting.

    I'm curious as to why.

    Is bitsetting really that important?

It's not important if everything you burn plays on everything you try it on.
In my own case, I cannot take any of my backups to my daughter's house, be it +R, +RW, -R, -RW, and play it while I babysit the g'son. Absolutely will not play in their Samsung that the guide to the left says they will.

Bitset to DVD-ROM, voila, they play.

Same with the g'daughter's PS2. Only thing that will play on it is a bitset ROM.

    So, yes, it is useful.

    Cheers,]

Dont know about RAM, but with my burner I can burn both +R and -R and also I can do bitsetting for my +R discs.
As far as if its really needed, thats a personal option really. gmatov says he needs it for the ps2 to play his discs, my ps2 will play them with or without the bitsetting applied to my burned +R discs.

I guess it is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it...Kinda like the NY Giants and 3 high priced QB's.

I think that explains why I am looking for a new player of my own that will play +R as well as -R (plus I want to get rid of the Toshiba on general principles). So far, the only brand I have seen in practise that will play all the formats I want is the Denon DVD-800 and DVD-900.

I guess if I get a DVD recorder that can write DVD+R/RW as well as DVD=R/RW, and can bitset, I will be happy. I'll just keep the 4040B to read DVD-RAM.

Maybe if I keep waiting, a recorder will show up that can read DVD-RAM and bitset?
