  1. Hi Guys

First of all i would not say that i am a Newb at backing up Dvd's. i have done loads of personel backups. The ptoblem that i am having {not sure if this is the right board} is:

I have 2 dvd's that i dont seem to be able to backup.

    Brother Bear reg.1
Nightmare On Elm Street 2 Reg.2

The problem is {both Original DVD'S} My dvd drive does not seem able to detect them. The disc just either spins away, stops, and then spins away again, i have left it for upto 10mins and still it wont detect them. The programes that i am using are AnyDvd and CloneDvd and dont have any other problems swopping over from region 1 - Region 2 or any other region. Both the DVD'S play straight away on my standalone dvd player and i have also tried them on my friends computer and both of them show up in his dvd player.

    Some of my comp. specs

    Asus Mothb.
    Athlon 3200
    Maxtor 80 gig HD
    Win XP Pro
    Pioneer 106D DVD-RW

any help would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks in advance

  2. So you can't even play them on your pc?

I would recommend a firmware upgrade for your dvd drive. And if that doesn't work I would start to wonder wheater your dvd is not broken.

  3. Hi Death_knight

Its just on these 2 DVD's any other original or backup play without any problem. i updated my Firware over 6 months ago and have never had any problems. I am wondering if it is anything to do with the DVD as it is Dual Layer and i am wondering if it is just having problems seeing Dual Layer Dvd's. I cant try another one yet as i have only got the one dual layer dvd at the moment.

    Thanks for trying though.

Saying you've done loads of personal backups I can't imagine you didn't rip any dual layer dvd discs. And I now from personal experience that a old 2x dvdrom drive can even read dual layer discs.

Maybe you have access to another pc or dvdrom drive to check if they can read the dvd's?

Quite a strange problem I must say The keep spining things does sound like bad medium to me.

I probably have done Dual Layer before, its just that i have never noticed them, as i never usually have any problems. I have tried the Dvd's in both my friends Pc and my brother_inlaws pc and neither have a problem reading them.

Have had a quick scout around on the Net and come across a similar problem to mine, but it was with The Philips Dvd writer, there were quite a few of them having the same sort of problems with Dual Layer Dvd's but they were all Philips writers and the thread was from 2002.

I was thinking of formating my Comp. and see if a clean install of everything might cure the problem.

  6. Well i have formated my comp. done a clean install of everything, left loads of my progs. off {just in case some other prog. was conflicting} still no joy. This weekend i decided to try the Dvd on 2 more computers {one of them with a bog standard dvd drive} worked on both of them. i decided to go through my Dvd collection putting in {nearly} every Dvd i had got, every one of them were recognised straight away, it did not matter whether they were reg.1 or reg.2 or whether they were original or back-ups, even the Dual layers played straight away {so there goes my Dual Layer theory} looks like i am of to buy a new Dvd Writer, will take the Dvd with me and buy another Pioneer {can't fault it other than this dvd} and try it in it before i buy it.

    Thanks for the help Death_Knight

Just though, instead of buying a Writer i may as well just get a Dvd Drive just for reading and see how that goes, as my writer is still working fine on everything else.

Yes, you could probably pick one up for £20 or so.

Just been out and bought a new Dvd drive plugged it in and it read it straight away. £17 to solve my problem, ended up buying a new Dvd Writer while i was there as the prices have really come down since i bought my last writer. {£86 for a New Pioneer 107 and a New JVC DVD Drive} i think i paid nearly £100 for my Pioneer 106 12mths ago. I will leave putting my new writer in for a bit though to see if i have any more probs with my old writer.
