What about being connected to the net whilst burning, and say, surfing or downloading, can this cause probs..?

I've backed up a bunch of DVD's without ever defraging my drive. I only do that every couple of weeks lately if that. And before that I never did it. I've never had a bad burn caused by not defraging my drive. I think if you have some sort of burn proof or buffer underrun protection on your drive it should'nt make a difference. Without that I could see it causing problems I guess.

Your PC spec is not bad, i see no reason why you shouldnt be able to burn while doing lots of other things on the pc. Cant say about the Norton thingy, but if the burning app does a decent lock on the dvd writer it should not be a problem if the antivirus try to access the drive while its burning. I use almost only DVDdecrypter for burning and never had problems even when running encoding sessions at the same time.
