For three years now, I have been using "Sharpie" brand permanent markers to label my CD-Rs and later DVD-Rs. Recently, I have been having doubts as to how safe these are for the media. Any thoughts?

Did you even TRY to do a forum search on this one? Or is this your idea of humor? Because if it is, you are one sick bastard! :P

Since you probably won't accept my standard response (Sharpies are for sniffing) I can tell you that DVDs shouldn't be a problem because they're encased in polycarbonate.

CDs are a different story. I've only had one disc ruined by a Sharpie, and that's because I wrote over an area where the 'protective coating' had been designed...poorly.

  3. Well, here's the standard response from Sanford (Sharpie mfr):

Is the SHARPIE marker safe for writing on CD's?

Sanford has used SHARPIE markers on CDs for years and we have never experienced a problem. We do not believe that the SHARPIE ink can affect these CDs, however we have not performed any long-term laboratory testing to verify this. We have spoken to many major CD manufacturers about this issue. They use the SHARPIE markers on CDs internally as well, and do not believe that the SHARPIE ink will cause any harm to their products.

Anyway, FWIW, Sharpies are alcohol based. Those special "CD markers" that are floating around (particularly the Memorex brand) are water based. Both are non-toxic (which blows the hell out of buying Sharpies for, among the usual purposes, a cheap buzz).

BTW, speaking of searches, would someone define the following:

    Forum
    Search
    Sick
    Bastard

    TIA

Glad you got to this one first! I also have to thank you as I know I would have gotten one of those famous Yellow Cards due to the content of my now moot point response...

  5. I have some CDs which are now "yelowing" around the edges of the writing from a Sharpie. It seems the fine point Sharpies are more prone to this than the standard medium point Sharpies, but both show it. One disc was difficult to recover (using EAC), but I did finally recover it after trying in several different CD drives.

Sorry, sorry. I should have done a search, but I had to go to lab and was in a hurry. In fact, because I posted this, I was late and almost lost $40 because I almost missed sign out of lab supplies. I also posted this figuring that if Sharpies were indeed harmful, this would bring the issue to the forefront once again to those not yet with the gift of knowledge. Anyway, thanks for all your responses.

It's all in good fun. That's why I put a few smileys up for all to see.

We found some common ground?! This can't be good.

  9. You didn't have to search, all you needed was to look at sharpie.com

  10. I used to use them all the time on my verbatim labeled cdrs and they never ate through the label. My oldest cdrs(2001) still play great, no errors. I use the cd markers now, just to be sure. And I now use TDK which labels are a TAD bit thinner.

    I actually ordered these yesterday:

My thinking was exactly like Dr. Gee's.

  13. The Memorex ones have a tendency to not show very well on shiny top media but are very nice on matte finish, and write in a finer point. The Fellowes alcohol based ones (Best Buy has them) work far nicer and are easier to read, but are medium point. The Sharpies are more than alcohol-based - they have other chemicals in them which theoretically could damage a disc, but it's incredibly doubtful and, by then, the whole technology will be obsolete. Use whatever you like.

I've been using Staedtler Lumocolor marking pens for a long time with no problems at all. They are made in Germany. More info about these at: www.staedtler.com

  15. Those pens look quite good. I'll look to see if I can find them at my local office supply store.

  16. You can get those at Staples, IIRC.

    ME TOO!

You must be on a bi-polar down swing, too bad it didn't happen on the up swing

SOmebody make a Sharpie discussion a sticky.

then again, they won't read it there either.

What do you mean they. I already explained why that day I didn't have time to search and apologized for it. Also I was hoping me bringing up the subject would benefit someone who would not have thought of searching. Apparently, you didn't bother reading through the thread and decided to lump me into some "they" category of people who stop by the board once, ask a retarded question and don't even bother saying thank you. The sticky idea is good though.

Anyway, has anyone tried the markers I ordered:

Actually, that one is buried a few pages into the sticky labels can.... post. So maybe someone should make a Sharpie yes of no FAQ to be made sticky.
