  1. I'm personally using WinMe, but thinking of upgrading to WinXP like many people. I quess we'll be asking the same questions so people with experience please share and help me with those question marks (or add more software reports)

    Thanks

So from the info I've read:

    SmartRipper ???
    DVD Decrypter ???

    TMPEncv2 works
    Other encoders ???

EZCD Creator 5 with XP update works
    Nero 5551 works

  2. "upgrading to WinXP like many people."
You obviously are NOT in the computer industry as a profession. 'Most' people are NOT upgrading to Windows XP. Why?
    1. Driver problems, most vendors do NOT have drivers that woork completely under XP.

    2. Software problems. From what I have seen, both in online reports and from friends. Quite a few programs do NOT work correctly under XP.

    3. The licensing and activation model. Most people, especially in the IT field do not want to have to talk with Micro$oft ever time they re-install the OS on a damaged workstation or server.

The main thing I am seeing in the industry is this: If you are running Win NT 4.0 (fully patched) or Windows 2000 and it is stable, your best bet is to NOT upgrade to XP. why complicate your life. If you are running ME, drop back to 98se or jump up to 2000.

Those are my opinions, based on quite a bit of reading.

  3. Sheesh you got out of the wrong side of bed this morning didn't you?
"Most" people probably aren't upgrading to XP.
However he said "Like many People"
So product activation puts you off? If you are in the "industry" as you condescendingly put it why aren't you using the corporate version like other "industry" users? No product activation with that version.
Limited driver support? I've had no problems but driver support with any new M$ system its always sketchy at 1st.
So your esteemed advice is to ditch ME and run 98 or 2000. Why?
XP does everything 98 or 2000 does only it looks a lot better, and IMHO it is more stable than 2000. This is from someone who is in the industry and has used 2000 on a variety of workstations since it was released.
So you dont like XP (have you tried it?) ..... so what?
This poor guy asked a question in readiness to upgrade his OS and you shoot him down in flames 'cos you dont like XP or product activation.
    Get a life.

Those are my opinions based on actually using the above mentioned operating systems.

  4. Wow...Relax...I'm not Bill! LOL

Thanks for your opinion on WinXP but all I wanted to know was what (rippers/encoders/burning sw) works under WinXP for now!...that's all.

Hopefully this thread can be used as a reference because I'm seeing (my observation) that most new packaged PCs are being shipped with WinXP installed and these potential VCD/SVCD newbies might be needing help.

In my company Bill's stormtroopers are offering us offers we can't refuse, so WinXP is unavoidable for our company at least.

Subliminal message *BUY WinXP, fly like those people in the commercial*

  5. Now Ive got that of my chest :¬)

I have had very few incompatibilty problems with XP. My scanner didn't work but then I couldn't get 2000 drivers for it either!

Adobe Premier 6, smartripper, dvd2avi, tmpgenc, vcdcutter, virtualdub and nero all work faultlessly.

    Hope this helps.

I agree with TheEditor, I'm also in the industry and most people are not flocking to Purchase XP for the same reasons noted.

Activation is nonsense, and driver compatibility s a problem
    check it out for yourself.

    TMPEncv2
    VirtualDub
    VCD Cutter
    Adobe Premier 6
EZCD Creator 5 with XP update

  9. There is a work-around for BBMPeg under XP(took me days to find it - it worked by accident once for me and I spent the next several days figuring out what I had done that made it work!)

On the first screen, press the "Project: Load" button. Press "cancel" in the dialog that comes up.

That's it - now all the other file opening buttons will work for doing demuxing. Why? I have no idea. But I'm glad it works - booting into WinMe to do my muxing was a pain in the behind.....

Actually it will cut movies. Just ignore the error ( At address blah blah, Read error occured.) you get, and just click ok, and then click run, and it will cut the video just fine.

    TMPenc1.2j
    Nero

Personally I do not work in the industry, would hate to be like the IT geeks we have here at work , so have only used win95-ME but so far i think Bill and Co have cracked it. 2 weeks now and I havent screwed up my pc so somethings gotta be working right.

Whoosh25, I can recently upgraded from Windows ME to XP Professinal Edition (just like you'll be doing, I can see the future!) and everything work the same (if not better) as it did in ME.
I only dream in black & white...
