a program i wanted to use needed the new 1.1 .net framework. so i downloaded it and installed it. now my computer is all screwed up. there is a login screen when i start up my computer that was never there before. i am the only one who uses my computer, so i had it just start up automatically. also, i used to hit control-alt-delete and it would bring up the task manager, so i could see what programs are runign and such. now, it minimizes everything, and brings up this window with 6 buttons on it, lock computer, log off, task manager, etc. so now i have to go in and click on task manager to use it. another thing that happened is it created its own user called ASP .NET MACHINE. i dont know if i should delete it or not, but its password protected. i searched around microsofts site to see what else this crap did to my computer, but i couldnt find anything. anyone know how to fix these things or where i can find a list of what else it changed?

BTW, im running win xp pro sp1

I installed SVCD2DVD and you have to use .net with it. It did the same thing with the damn logon. I was wondering how to rip it out of there also. Really pisses me off to have to log onto my own computer. I figured I would just complete my SVCD2DVD conversions, then reformat the HD. You can disable .net, but if I could just get rid of the logon crap I would be happy.

ok, this thing has totally messes with my computer. now, my usb mouse refuses to work every once in a while. the computer locks up every time i try to go into standby or hibernation. my logon is totally screwed up, sometimes the standard winxp logon screen comes up, sometimes it just logs on automatically like i want it to, and sometimes i get a logon window similar to that in windows nt. so i go to add/remove programs and remove the 1.1 .net software, and that didnt fix my problem

Hey, I did a search on google for 'eliminate windows logon' and found a few pages. It suggested turning off the 'guest' account. Did that. Nothing. Then it said to go to 'control panel' and then 'user accounts' and change the logon to 'windows logon'. That didn't make any sense as I didn't see that option exactly with XP pro. But I went ahead and clicked 'Use the welcome screen'. Figured what the hell, so I checked that box and rebooted. Hey, the shit was gone! I figured this was too easy, but after two reboots, no logon. I did uninstall net a week or so ago. And I don't know if switching off the guest account had anything to do with it, but hooray, it's gone for now and my boot up is about three times faster.
EDIT: Didn't seem to have any of your other problems, just the logon crap.

  5. Go to user accounts in the control panel, change the way users log on/off. Enable box things and that will make the CTRL-ALT-DEL screen go back to normal.

    Or start
    run
    msconfig
    services tab
check off fast user switching restart

hillkack, i tried that fix before and it didnt work.

so i undid the system restore and tried 808smokey's tips, but they didnt help at all. so i just re-did the system restore and now my computer is back to normal. all those new menu's were just pissing me off. like when i hit shut down, it used to bring up a window with three buttons, hibernate, shut down and restart, and when you hold down shift the hibernate would switch to standby. with the framework installed, it brought up a window with a drop down menu to select what i want to do. which makes one extra click for whatever i want to do. i know im lazy, but i liked the old way better.
